LWAYS remember your lifesavers and to cancel your indicators (which is an automatic fail if you dont). Best of luck to you both.. hey if I can do it I'm sure you will both be fine. :)

Good advice there petal, I use "lifesavers" in the car too. It's saved at least one bike from a nasty surprise.

Good luck for your part two Kryten me old, the only time you'll look back will be in a lifesaver :pDT_Xtremez_15:

I passed mine this time last year. Failed Mod 1 first time round by watching the speedo and not where i was going when doing the emergency stop. Actually ran over the speed trap. A first apparently!
After that the Mod 2 is a walk in the park. Treat it as just another lesson to keep the nerves in check. I actually forgot to cancel my indicators once but that was after some stupid bint pulled out on me from the side of the road. He commended me on my reactions and as we didnt pass any turn off's he let me off with a minor.
A week later I was (and still am) riding a CBR600F. Love it.

Good luck!!

So, I did the Mod 2 test, and I failed.....absolutely gutted.

It was all going so well - I had a lesson the day before in St Helens and went through all the tricky junctions, saw where all the speed cameras were and generally got a good feel for the place.

Day of the test and although the weather was bad, the test got off to a good start - I made a few minor mistakes but nothing critical..

Got onto the dual carriageway, got up to the speed limit OK, then slowed down to a set of traffic lights behind a dustcart. Lights went to green and we pulled away. Realising I had to overtake, I looked in the right hand mirror - it was clear - did the remaining checks, put on the indicator and began to pull out. As I did, out of nowhere this white Escort van shot past my examiner and the car that was behind me, and slammed on his anchors.

When I got back to the test centre, I knew I'd failed. The examiner confirmed this, saying that even though the guy in the van was speeding (she was doing 70 and by her estimate he was doing 90-95) I should have seen him and waited....

The really irritating thing was that if it wasnt for that I only got 5 minors so I would have passed......

Gutted.

On the plus side at least the van missed you. It must be absolutely galling to have failed because of somebody else. Shame you didn't take their registration and report them to the feds

Ach well never mind. Treat it like a lesson, learn from it (you'll not make the same mistake again) get another lesson while you wait the time period you have to between tests and you'll breeze it. Get it in swift before summer really ends. You'll be fine next time. Don't let one little dint bother you. :)

Right, its test time again - different school, different test location, and a lot more confidence this time....there's a 2nd hand Hornet out there with my name on it....

Reading back at your post I had a similar thing with my MOD2 - some t**t decided to cut me up on a roundabout - I managed to avoid the accident and sneakily gave him the finger. Thankfully my examiner was cool about it and said I handled it well and there was nothing I could have done so passed with 3 minors when I was so sure I'd failed! Greatest surprise ever!

Good luck mate! Just remember to keep calm, head up and remember those lifesavers :)

Well, after trying twice and failing I can now report that this particular mechanoid took his MOD 2 test yesterday for the 3rd time and passed with only one minor......so my days of chuntering around on a 125 are now over....any top tips on a first "proper" bike are welcomed!

Congratulations, I'm glad I did mine when a quick ride round Boston was sufficient to get a full ticket. What bike depends on what you want to do. I'm more than happy with my ER6F, sensible when you need to be, quick enough to bring a smile when you want to.

But I still like my 2 MZ's for giggles.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Bandits, Hornets and ER6's as John mentioned... Really easy to ride, comfy and with enough oomph to get you out of a sticky spot...

SV650's are also supposed to be good starting bikes, and very forgiving!

I started out last year on a S reg ZX6R and couldn't believe the weight difference between that and the ER5 I learned on, it was so much heavier. I then took a test ride on an 06 reg R6 which was much more nimble. I've not ridden enough bikes to say get this or get that but I would recommend buying newer for an easier and safer ride.

Congratulations

For your first bike I'd go for a standard unfaired bike, like others have said, Hornet, Bandits or Versys should be good step up and the SV650 or SV650s will give you access to a cheap v twin and a lazier more torquey way of riding, you tend to get more bike for your money if you buy a Suzuki.

Your first big bike what ever you get, mine was a GS500, will feel big and powerful but unless you get a litre bike you'll grow into it quite quickly and may even grow out of it so don't go buying an expensive one.

I'm a triple/twin fan myself but that's me, I also like the way that having an unfaired bike keeps your top speed down without spoiling low speed accelleration and chucking the thing into corners (not bushes).

Main thing is enjoy and don't allow your ambition to exceed your ability.

Thanks for all the tips - having gone up to my local dealer there is a rather nice Hornet that has piqued my interest - I'm having a look round but I think its the one for me....

If you do buy a Hornet, and if you do take it to Normandy for a weeks biking, and you do fill up the tank from the Carrefour petrol station in Villers-Bocage.........................................Make sure it's not diesel. My mate did, and still can't live it down.

Enjoy it.

Very nice Kryten.

I have just recently decided I want my full licence after 20 years of not riding. I am doing CBT tomorrow and Mod 1 at the end of the month.

(strange situation, I have no need to do CBT ever because of when I passed my car test, I can ride a moped forever without needing one, but because I want a full Bike licence I need to go and do one, and while I am obviously going to do it on big bike I could technically do it on a twist and go 50?)
