If they are housed at Public expense, they should be put to work to earn their keep. Plenty of fields in Lincolnshire where food needs picking. Plenty of litter needs picking up. Stick these young men in a Govt-co-ordinated minibus at 8am and send them to pick fruit and veg. Cut out the gangmasters that have exploited migrant labour for decades. pay them NMW, then deduct the cost of room & food, leaving them with money in their pocket and self-dignity that they are contributing to the country they have so desperately wanted to be in. Once their case is approved, they are let free to pursue whatever career they want, but with no state support.

I'm all for providing a safe haven for genuine refugees fleeing persecution, and have no doubt that those genuine cases would do literally any job to say "thankyou" to the UK for keeping them safe.
A good bit of sensible Keynesian economics. Full employment leading to more people earning, paying into the local economy and becoming less dependent.

And addressing the elephant in the room or more accurately the dog in a box. What to do with the remains of the dog whose name we cannot utter out loud today.

"The Royal Air Force heritage team has asked a local council to remove the grave of the Dambusters' dog......... An application was submitted on Tuesday to West Lindsay District Council to remove the grave from Hangar Two, one of four Grade II-listed C-Type hangars at RAF Scampton, and move it along with any remains to RAF Marham in King's Lynn."

There's a phrase you don't hear every day....or any day, in fact
So you think they should be fed and watered for free (or rather at the taxpayers' expense)? And deporting them isnt an option, as they are already here and need feeding, and even if it were an option, there's a time drag between arrival and deportation.

80 years ago tonight, the raid that was a significant event in our war of survival against Nazi Germany was launched from Scampton.

Now look at what is happening to the place. Was that effort bloody worth it?

That's a difficult direct comparison to make. Britain is still a sort of democracy. Most of Europe is free and thriving. The dams are now repaired and serving their community. The fact that Britain now has a hollowed out military has led to Scampton being surplus to requirements. The largest refugee camp in the world is NW Kenya. I struggle to equate the dams raid with Britain being unable to to process migrants.

It's just the council acting like a spoilt kid getting upset because another kid wants to play with a toy they haven't looked at for 15 years.
"Spoilt kid" still whinging in a legal way of course.

"Plans to use the home of the legendary Dambusters squadron to house asylum seekers are 'unlawful' and should be quashed, council bosses say, amid a bitter legal battle to stop the proposal from going ahead."

there is surely an element of NIMBYism around this whole affair.

Can’t blame them, just not a valid argument in the current situation, in the past plenty of Cold War RAF bases became jails when no longer required, including at least one for nonces.

Go only local Facebook page or other social media platform and you can see that any change, good, bad or indifferent, brings out the complainers.

62% voted for Brexit in West Lindsay and 61% in Braintree. A large majority voted in both areas for the UK to take a tougher stance on immigration. The Govt are doing this by rounding the migrants up and housing them in pre-processing areas where they are controlled and monitored before either deportation or the granting of asylum, at which point they are free to live wherever they wish.

I would have thought those 62% would have been cheering this from the rafters, not objecting. Unless of course they expected it to be somebody else's problem to accommodate the boat people. (Which of course they did!)

Bloody NIMBYs.

One of the arguments from an ex Chinny crewman won't hold much water!

"It is wrong because its inhumane putting 2,000 people in the middle of nowhere, in portacabins with the bad weather coming."

Has he never been to the Falklands? 1000s in portacabins in all weathers.

Maybe we could send them to the Falklands that would be some deterrent?

Better they are in camps than posh hotels at our expense. They get 3 meals a day and no energy bills unlike our own homeless.
It's time they were told we don't want you unless you have skills we need.

I think the point is we don't know if they've got the skills, because the Govt has been so lax in processing them.

If you are coming to the country illegally, I think it’s safe to assume the skill set is probably not in demand In this country.

Happy to be proved wrong, however, I”m pretty certain if these boats were full of Doctors, Scientists and other highly skilled in demand professions the BBC and Sky would be interviewing them left right and centre, and wouldn’t be relegating the allegations of people trafficking and absconding to the back pages.

If they do come to Scampton and if the BBC is right it's going to cost a few bob.

"The cost of housing asylum seekers in a former RAF base in Lincolnshire could reach £260m by 2026, a leaked government document shows. Ministers have argued placing asylum seekers on sites like RAF Scampton would be cheaper than using hotels. But a Home Office memo written just days before plans were announced found the change only represented "marginal" value for money over three years."
