Hiya.
Could anybody tell me, if you can, what the actual daily routine of a RAF Firefighter is, I have heard a little about the job role (that its boring, you don't do anything, sit on ya' bum all day, never attend any fires etc), is all that true or is it actually an ok trade to go into?

Just wondering

If you're at Coningsby, it seems a requirement to be able to be a f@cking electrician to qualify you to talk down to people who are actually leckies about how to wire a plug.

And to be a hypocrite when it comes to telling people not to wedge doors open with extinguishers when that's exactly what happens in the fireman's corridor in the barrack block.

Get the leckies to ask some tough electrical safety questions, that'll stump em!
Report the mis-use of extinguishers in the block.

They don't like it up them!

I did - on both counts during CCS. The response to the second matter when I stated this was going on in the block that I'm I/C of was (and i kid you not) " Not on my watch, must be someone else"

"There you go fella, I've given you proof of an infringement, I've also documented it. What are you gonna do about it?"

Firefighter routines

Firefighter routines

No such thing its a fact. However you need a sence of humour to deal with all those overpayed fitters (or is it techies) who do insist on dismantling fire alarm systems or setting fire to their rooms after two shadies, however all those Fireman sam videos were worth watching, we now watch full metal jacket, saving Private Ryan etc now cos we are always deployed to some choice holiday resort along with everyone else.
Rock on its great if you don't like leave its free!!::/:

You were right the first time - RAF Firefighters have an appalling staff retention problem for a reason: Fighting real fires is something that happens once in a blue moon (if they're really lucky) and a lot of Fire Sections are co-manned by civilian Defence Firefighters earning 4 times the salary for less hours work. You can't really blame them all for wanting to leave.

Unless they have changed the rules then I doubt you can become a RAF firefighter due to the fact your a lass and I think its still one of the few trades in the RAF that is blokes only.

Open to chicks as well matey.

We dont have a lot of them, but there are a few.

Well not quite, 2 stations are co-manned.

DF&RS firefighters are employed for a 42 hour week, thats not so disimilar to what most people in the forces are supposed to work

as for the pay, well yes your right, they earn more. However they also pay 11% of that into a mandatory pension scheme. and after a few years the incremental pay system actually balances out. Yes they are paid overtime, but so are all civilians when needed, and i know that the mod is paying these guys to work so that RAF guys can get leave etc, so its not all bad

The RAF Fire Service are the unsung hero's of the Air Force. Sure everybody shouts there mouth off about us not doing anything but wash trucks and play volleyball, but the Fire Service are a highly professional organisation and trade.
Of course like any trade in the mob it can be a bit mundane at times, yes there is a bit of training to be done daily, yes kit is checked and maintained, and fire extinguishers are serviced and issued, this all adds up to the bigger fire safety picture. All in all not even the civillian fire service deal with towering infernos everyday. We are specialists in Aircraft Crash Fire and Rescue and thankfully aircraft don't fall out of the sky all the time, but when it does happen these people who slate us are glad to see us. Civillian or Service being a fire fighter is the way forward.

Hello to you my dear and trusted friend, at last you have submitted your first post!

I totally agree with your statement, and cant wait to debate its pro's and cons when i come visiting in a few weeks!

Surely that should be 'the MOD is paying these guys to work so that RAF guys can go OOA to Iraq & Afghanistan'
