Pay rises in the past

Arrrrrrrrrrrr under Jim Callaghan's Labour government in the 70's. some guys were so poor after the annual pay rise that they qualified for some of the benefits at the time. Anyone know if this is this case now?
How we loved Maggie when she got in!!!

I remember when SACs got benefits back in the 70s.

It was after the Fireman strike of 77/78 that we got the big pay rise. As a JT my pay rise took me to above what my Chief was getting the day before the pay rise.

We also changed from Fitters to Technicians at the same time.

Granted by the Labour Party who implemented it as a full pay rise as it was planned to be staged under the Tories.

"I remember when SACs got benefits back in the 70s."

Those SACs that qualified were not aircraft or technical trades. Mainly limited to Medic's, clerks, stewards etc. However, things were so tight that even I went to fill a claim in at the time...which is why I know the above.

We got a 17% pay rise from Labour in 1976 (I think) but, as was said at the time, "17% of sod-all is still sod-all" (I substituted the word SOD for something less printable)

This was just after the famous "You can buy a lot of Smarties for £40-a-week" advertising era.

10% Dennis Healey was chancellor who also recommend staged increase of 32% overall, Thatcher cancelled later stages when assuming power under the Tories.

Didn't aircraft trade SACs get about 13% or something like that during, or just after Granby?

Same here, a married SAC rigger on the same section as me but with two nippers got the early version of tax credits FIS (Family Income Suplement) to bump his income up. He could'nt afford to run a motor and his income was just enough. Poor sod could only join us singlies for a beer in the boozer about twice a month.

And what pay rises did we get from the wicked witch after that. I remember a 1 1/2 % pay rise given to us, 1% in the October and the remainder in the January for a pay rise we usually got in April and food and accom increased by 3%.

Now, Now. We'll have none of this anti-Tory stuff on here.

Havent you realised that everything in the world is always Labour's fault, and the poor Tories are forced to make these "difficult decisions" because of the mess created by the big bad socialists.

Come now. The Tories love the forces and vice versa. Hence the blue vote from a sizable majority of those who serve.....despite what the Tories do to them. Propaganda works.

Well in the Thatcher years the Tories were better governements for the armed forces. I joined in 1977 and saw my wages jump significantly in the following years through the 80s.

But not now. Question is, would Red Eds lot be any more favourable towards the forces than Comoron is being? I doubt it.

I remember a pay rise in the 60s that put me (just) into a new tax bracket; I was worse off !
Then there was the famous devaluation by 'Arold Wislon: "This will not affect the pound in your pocket. . . "
I was in RAFG at the time and it bloody well DID.

That's why the was the famous defence cuts of John knott leaving us without a presence in the south Atlantic, gave the green light for the argies. Options for change defense cuts. So the Tories really like the armed forces then

Look neither political party will shove money into the forced as putting the same money into schools and hospitals will win more votes, and that is all politicians care about.

Back on topic I remember a couple of nice rises in the early nineties, got a bit peeved by the staged rises after that but then loved the move to shiney wages in 2009 to make my last two years happier.
