So far up here, LEAN has enabled a few select individuals (and many dragged in against their will) to call themselves things like KILLT and..wait for it...Tiger Teams!! You can just see them advertising for Frosties next!
Then they've brought in KANBAN, an (I believe) American parts supply process enabling the disbandment of forward stores and instead having items in small bins at the workplace with a green/red card system. Sounds good, and in theory it is, except that the system now takes at least twice as long to get replenishments, twice the amount of paperwork produced (environment, remember) and you then have to bypass it so you can get some kimwipe on the jet that's about to take off!
The principles of the just-in-time idea that LEAN also promotes is good in an industry like a car factory. You can order 100 radiators for the car you're building to be delivered at an exact day because that's when you'll need them.
However, on our aircraft, which started life as an airliner back in 1949!, it's not quite the same. Most of the companies that made the parts that are now failing probably went out of business about 40 years ago!
So 10/10 for the general idea, but minus several million for thinking it through properly before throwing it all in at the same time.
