But still being debated here

Two former Royal Air Force chiefs and a former Tory defence minister have condemned a cost-cutting decision to ditch a vital special forces aircraft as "perverse" and "extraordinary".

Thoughts? Were they managed in such a way towards the end that they could have extended or ran, metaphorically, into the ground?

Absolutely could have been run on, cost cutting measure, nothing more.
Harrier, Nimrod, bean counters rule now.
Once it was "how much will it cost to complete the task". Now it's "with this budget how much of the task can you complete?"

A constant cycle of retirement without replacement. We may as well just give up.

It's an absolute travesty canning our Fat Alberts....The Raf should flog off the older frames and purchase at least a dozen brand spankin' C130 J models from Lockheed....

Atlas?.....Pfft!.....

We all know as much as the SLT will try and retain a platform, they are but ministerial appointments and will toe the line. I am yet to come across a commander who will break ranks and come out and shame the government. As said its the bean counters who will call the shots and we have top do more with less.

Is Atlas really such a failure as an aircraft or is it because it hasn't yet won any affection in the same way the Hercules had?

I seem to remember plenty of issues with C130J when it first entered service (which is pretty much the norm for newly introduced airframes) but will A400M win the post Herc hearts and minds of the people who staff it?

Whilst they found their feet the J's didn't do much, more than once, it was suggested, in the early days of its introduction, that the J's be painted nimrod hemp colour to blend in better as pan blanks:eek:. The old K chaps who had been there for years and years were not keen on the new fangled J's to begin with.

Met an A400 GE on an airworthiness course last October - he literally had nothing good to say about it nor the organisation running it.

Because it was a sell out like anything else? Mate of mine is a GE on them, must ask his opinion. Vis a civvy operation with civvy kites as an appraisal.
