I've always thought NAFD to be a bit of a misnomer. Sure, it's always nice to get a pat on the back from the public but IMHO it was only devised by Brown to garner a bit of support by being seen to be supporting HMF. It always seems that on a day set aside for US, WE are usually jiffed for duty. Why not have NAFD as a day where all shops, bars, restaurants, etc give either free or heavily discounted deals, museums, attractions, etc have free entry, that kind of thing? After being on a nationwide recruiting tour for 3 years and OOA last year, this is the first year I've been off on NAFD so I was able to see NAFD from the other side of the fence for the first time and there didn't seem to be anything in place for service people who weren't working, no parades, no recruiting and outreach display, etc. Indeed, in a lot of places would it be incorrect to say there was very little sign of a national appreciation of our forces?
Also, I've always been sceptical about this perceived "support" the forces have been getting over the last few years with H4H, the Millies, NAFD, etc. It's all well and good whilst we have a large and heavy commitment in Afghanistan but it was only a few years ago when if you told someone you were in the services, it was a little bit like saying you wanted rape their kids. We're only cool and popular because The Sun has told people to like us. in 2015 when Herrick is over and done with, I reckon NAFD will fall by the wayside as we go back to being the country's most expensive and exclusive flying, sailing and gun club.
