Who's next for more pay?

Well here is a subject close to all our hearts, pay.

There are many problems with the forces today, and it seems that one of the best ways that the Airships can think of to solve our problems is to offer us more and more financial incentives.

So who will be the next trade to be awarded the higher pay band, an FRI or even specialist pay?

I'll have some more pay if its on offer.

Or they could just pay us all a decent fcuking wage for what we do.

I think next on to the higher pay scale will be Squippers and before anything gets said I'm not one. It does seem strange that they have been over looked since pay2000 came in, when we went to a brief about pay2000 the squippers were told chefs were going on it due to them being accountable if they gave anyone food poisioning, to which one of the lads reply was"if a parachute fails to open we are accountable" leaving one stunned and silenced Wingco.

Well I suspect this is a bit of a fishing trip, but anyway here goes. I'd say if the Airships had any common sense they'd look to offer a significant financial incentive to aircraft techies. Paticular at the junior ranks and cpl level, and as a consequence of that, look to actually implement a financial incentive to accept your 3rd. I say this due to the very real situation which is occuring whereby SAC's are leaving to significant pay rises in the oil and gas, railway or indeed unlicenced civil aircraft sectors.

However I stated thats what I think should happen if the airships had any common sense. As a result i'm waiting to see the announcement that PTI's training is to be halved in duration while they'll instantly attain the rank of Flt Lt with honourary flying pay.

Wouldn't it be brilliant if they actually paid us more than civvy street? Lets face it, the pay is supposed to be the "equivelant" of the civvy counterpart + the X factor. I could hang up my green overalls and put on a set of blue ones for an instant 20% pay rise and less **** to put up with. Wheres the cash going to come from though. By the looks of things we're already over spent and robbing from one budget to pay another......

There should not be Retention Incentives. They should start looking at the root cause of the problem and not start dangling carrots that only apply to approx 4% of the trade. (I seem to remember thats how the firefighters one worked out, although stand to be corrected)

Mono, I think you've put your digit exactly on the button. It's always been gubmnt policy to dream up some new, fashionable, whizz-bang scheme which often involved little or no consideration of the problems for the last 40 years. You'd think that someone, even a newbie in their Airships, would have twigged that by now, but it seems not.

Independent Reviews, Internal think-tanks, Committees and all the whole smokin' stupid lot have not realised that Pay is not always the answer (it usually is accompanied by changes in 'charges' and other stuff so all you get is a higher Tax bill).

"This will not affect the Pound in your pocket" (Harold Wilson, on the devaluation of the Pound). It went from about 12.50DM to 10.70DM overnight and we didn't get a look-in, just that much the poorer.

Excellent post GFF, but smacks far too much of common sense. It's not trade bashing to say (for example) a technician should be paid for than a chef; other wise what's the point of all those months of technical training when you can just do a bean warming course and get paid the same (or more if your oppo is an AMM!)

If the powers that be do not recognise that the core of the airforce's business is operating aircraft and that key to doing this successfully is valuing both aircrew and engineering effort, then they are going to end up without flexibility or capability. And I include squippers and jeffreys in that, and I'm an aircraft techie.

So why don't you leave if our pay is that bad??? I don't believe our pay is that bad!!! I get paid well for what I do even after being screw3d over on Pay 2000 years ago. But we get paid a salary and have a job to do.

Their is a hell a lot of whinging and people saying "I could earn more on the outside". Time for you folks to put up or shut up. Lets face it. If anybody deserves extra pay right now it's your poor Army Infantry Bod, RAF Regt and other unnamed Army, RAF and NAVY units that no doubt support them in the FRONT lines at the FRONT and not in some ancilliary support job behind the lines (like I am in as part of TG4).

I think you'll need bigger bait than that....

Oh mate, don't tempt me with the sarcasm button !-)

Actually, I think there is an awful lot of truth in what RJL says. Clearly, if money is your No.1 issue and the money is better somewhere, then go and get it. Talk is cheap

Back on topic. I think a flexible, structured and progressive scheme that would help people with housing. And before you scoff, lets look at the benefits of getting people onto the housing market:
  • It would overcome the issue of people effectively ploughing money into a rental system which they struggle to get out of because of our mobile situation. As an indicator, I reckon I've paid nearly £25,000 in quarter rent
  • It would significantly reduce the estate the MOD have to look after. The current situation is far from perfect with frequent reports in the press and sub-standards and I genuinely think they would prefer us all to 'live out' properly.
  • We are moving towards far fewer bases and therefore our disturbance in many cases is likely to decrease. This prevents more opportunities for stability for those that want it.
I am convinced the MOD would save a relative fortune in getting people out of quarters. The only problem I see with this plan is that they seem too narrow minded to speculate into these savings and invest in them both for their own benefit and that of their people.

So I suppose my answer is, it should be everyone.

My own opinion is that certain trades will be awarded specialist pay much like the EOD boys recieved lately.

This bonus cash would be linked to certain ranks / roles, thereby precluding a blanket move for a whole trade up to the higher pay range, but allowing reasonable percentage to qualify. perhaps one of the excluded categories could be the sick lame and lazy.
