The Nimrod rumours are spreading, once it's started in the papers you just know there is a little truth somewhere.

It's quite interesting that all the rumours he's quashed so far have happened..lol

Lived in Forres for nigh on 5 years before I joined up. An absolute ****hole back then with 17% unemployment so Christ only knows how bad it'll get with Kinloss closing.

He said that while the Nimrod was not in service the base would use “fantastic” flight simulators. “But it is still not as good as it would have been had we had the aeroplane,” he added.

You dont say? :pDT_Xtremez_35:

Hercs picking up some of the duties?? Capability aside are there many Hercs sat around doing nothing, apart from the broken ones of course. I was under the impression that the Herc fleet was a tad busy.

I think this is just the usual boring rumour mill in action again; and you know what sensationalist local press are like, particularly in quiet rural areas where jobs are scarce. Quite apart from anything else, I don't think Waddo will have the space for them anyway.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my stake on Kinloss being up and running properly again by 2012.

A whole camp for just 9 ac seems a bit excessive?

On the face of it, yes. They are 9 very specialist aircraft however, and most of their work (maritime patrol/recon/life support) is around the North of the UK.

With Ivan sticking flags under the North Pole, still constantly testing our air defences and causing QRA scrambles, and the rumoured oil to be had there, we'd do well to keep our eyes open. :pDT_Xtremez_26:

Strange this one, i'm at ISk and get briefed twice a week on whats going on...... Never heard a thing about the unit closing except the usual upcoming defence review stuff.
With the impending review i'd say there aren't many units that are truly safe (brize, Conningsby and Waddo possibly exceptions) the rest are all fair game as far as i can see. Kinloss will appear safer to the personnel here when we have some MRA4's on the pan and in the sky with RAF crews onboard. Till then we're in a bit of a dodgy position...

so without the mighty hunter, what is going to stooge around the oggin looking for lost ships/ submarines/ other nimrody- type stuff? Hercs can do some SAR, but if they are in wilts/ oxford its not going to be awesome for the poor shipwrecked boat having to wait for hours for the plane to transit...

Nothing! Is the basic answer
Done SAR on a herc and it really isn't fun.
As soon as there's an MRA4 at Kinloss and a crew to fly it we will have 'some' capability to do SAR, lost ship hunting etc... the rest of it will come over time.

Hang on a minute - cunning plan!

Shut Kinloss and leave Lyneham open!

Reason - apart from Kinloss is a hell hole - its too far North to serve the whole of the UK coastline/waters and Lyneham is far more geographically suitable - or it wouldn't be covering SAR!

Or it just that the only frames we have to cover SAR for a while are at Lyneham.....
Allegedly!

I guess the MRA4s stand-off capability negates the fixed/home base issue:

"The MRA4 will provide the Royal Air Force with at least 30 years of adaptable capability in maritime reconnaissance and attack operations. This is a hugely capable platform with a flexible mission system, excellent and secure communications capability, advanced defensive aids and the potential to carry a whole range of modern weapons."

Equipped with more than 90 antennae and sensors and containing over six million lines of software code, the MRA4 is able to fly 6,000 miles or 14 hours without refuelling and can scan an area the size of the UK every 10 seconds.

Ok, it is from BAE, so some poetic licence maybe involved. Even so, the actual fixed home base will not matter (from a SAR/role perspective)

Or am I missing something?

I gave up when they called it a "new" aircraft!

Am sure they were refurbished MR2 fuselages that I started stripping back in the 90's.

Very much poetic license!
