The main thing to remember is this

Will a merger happen? - yes

Will it have any immediate impact bar a few token jobs? - No

Where will it happen mainly? - at JR level

Will all the scopies try and get the feck out of Boulmer? - Too fecking right

Will TG9 head to Boulmer? - When forced!

The choice on promotion from Cpl - Sgt in TG12 is limited to very few jobs, and roles with not much satifaction I am lead to believe. Is this correct?

Depends on the job, I am quite happy at the moment but had 3 years on shift before it. Shift work suits some, just not me with 2 young kids.

There are some interesting SNCO jobs, depends what you want from life. Couple of OOAs that are definately 6 monthers in a Joint (Army run) environment (I have that pleasure coming up).

SDR considerations

SDR considerations

For my part, I am concerned that the eagerly anticipated Strategic Defence Review (SDR) will mean cuts in manpower across the RAF; this is expected. The ACOS Manning Roadshow Gp Capt confirmed that by 2013, the RAF would be at best 38500 strong. This is a pre-SDR figure and could actually get to as low as 30000. The proposal of TG9/12 amalgamation will undoubtedly highlight areas where TG9 and TG12 manpower could be whittled down which is why I am concerned. Lean is here and it could get even leaner! Just at a time where TG9 manning levels are almost 100%.....

I think however that the Controllers and FCs should be more concerned as these are areas that they will definitley look at. If I was an ATC controller I would be looking at a civilian option right now....

And you're not expecting the Ops Branch to be looked at because....?

Ops Branch is already capped for at least 2 years but dont quote me on that as some FOOs may get the hump....(last FOTS course currently in session). Who knows if they will recruit any more?

Could be a seperate thread altogether..........

once upon a time when ops rooms where in solid concrete bunkers and we all wrote backwards..those that were in 1991 will know this...and we berated scopies because they had to continue writing backwards... we are coming full circle again. I wouldnt mind they have been talking about a merger for 15 years and it still hasnt happenned . If the merger happens , once SDSR has happenned and the RAF has shrunk massively by losing several sites, all those last tourists who want to go to Durham might find that actually Boulmer wont be too bad if they can live at home. It might turn out in our favour as they have more overseas postings than we have. at SNCO level there is an airborne component too, add that to the 9 different positions(Tower,Ops,Sqn Ops,Area Radar,SAR,ARCC,AUS,LFBC and flight planning) you can work as an FOA and suddenly you find yourself with a choice of 10 different jobs, how many other trades can say this?

will there be chaos? well no because as has happenned already they will establish extra posts for the transition (FISP ring any bells?) and scopies will work alongside as they do now, it just means for those that want durham youcould be involved in the frontline against the russians doing another job entirely...it could be right up your street. Lets face it their sgts are on the higher payband so on promotion does that mean youget a bigger payrise if you specialise in BM?

with the SDSR i dont think this will stay with the scribblies we are the only trade group with cpls on the lower pay band....

it wont be that bad and i really dont think generally we will notice a difference ( apart from the reduction of stations after SDSR)

well thats my thoughts anyways.....
