Hi im new and currently applying to the RAFP well the raf hoping to go into the RAFP,
I was wondering if anybody would answer a few questions. . .

What is training like/ what does it involve
What kit do you carry? ie are equiped the same as HO police?
Apparently you guy do a lot of on the gate securtiy or is this just a myth from years ago?
What rank are you when you have completed traing and passed out as a snowdrop?
how much do you earn?
What roles do you fufil in hostile situations / in combat?

A lot of questions I know but you guys seem reletivly unique and the careers website is a world away from you guys actually doing the job!!! Thank you bery much to anybody who take the time to reply!!!!:pDT_Xtremez_26:

1ST QUESTION - why RAF POLICE?! ( have you something wrong with you?)

1ST FACT - you WILL be hated by all other forces personnel

A FEW ANSWERS- you will pass out as an ACTING copper (sac pay) but think your a full screw. depending on the station you are based you will have different on gate duties according to station orders. i think im right in saying your trade training is still at Halton but sorry not to sure bout course times. If you go into your Local AFCO and give them your grades ( RAF POLICE NEED NO GCSE'S!) they will tell you what you can do.. but id think long and hard about which trade you choose... for the first 10 years of your career you might have a dog outranking you... happy applications...

Come on guys, give the bloke a break, he came on her with valid questions, and got a slating even before he is a copper. While I loath the RAFP with every sinue in my body, they do save me from doing the main gate at Basra, so they do have a purpose.

SW there are a few coppers on here who will be able to answer your questions, so you may get a sensible answer yet.

Nope, young, dumb and full of....stupid ideas.

Try to be a proper copper, or pick another trade in the RAF.
I was a pretendy fireman in the RAF, you'd be a pretendy copper. Think long and hard.

SW, I second the sentiments of sausage2, the majority of RAFP are throbbers, but you get the occasional good one who does a worthwhile job, where is Chip with his view?

Raf police are involved with patrols around married quarters and the technical sites on raf bases, they also are involved with crime investigation although nothing too exciting it seems, they can specialise later on - some become dog handlers etc, but as somebody who has talked to snowdrops many of them arent happy with their lot.

Civvi plod have a much better job and get payed loads more, my old man is one and seems to do alright, the others posts about being hated by other trades are not far from the mark.

I hate to admit this but i nearly joined as raf pol (i didnt know anything about the raf at the time) im so glad i didnt.

However if you do decide to go for the police remember to give us techies a break or we'll slap you with our wallets !!!! :pDT_Xtremez_30:

SW,

As someone in recruiting, I can hopefully put things straight a little. Don't worry about the pay thing as coppers do get paid the same as everyone else and have moved into the higher pay band at certain ranks. This will not mean much to you at the moment and the AFCO will have given you the correct figures.

Secondly, don't worry about what trade people (including the AFCO) think you should do; research the choices, pick a trade and go for it! Only you will know what will make you happy and interest you.

Your AFCO is the best place to go for info. No disrespect to anyone here but we (those in the "real" jobs") don't have access to the trade selection sheets and will be speaking from "experience" and possibly prejudice.

I would join up as an Armourer...then you can keep the "rozzers" busy throughout the nite writting statements rather than them stuffing their faces on curry and kebabs.... Have a good career...get back on with what you are thinking of trying...make it soon.

Why not consider...

Why not consider...

...the GEF style trade? You know, the one that does ground equipment, MT maintenance etc etc? As long as you have some kind of mechanical bent, there will be loads (haha) of training and quallies to get you a real job in civvy street in 5 years or so!! Paid pretty well while you build your skills & experience! Besides, those of us aeroplane trades need licensing to do our job 'outside' if we want the big bucks. That was 26 years well spent...jet engines and tinnitus...

Roll on October!

RAFP training is now done joint at Southwick Park (the scribblies are there now too).

We seem to have loads of RAFP coming through at the moment, word from Trade Training is ... you'd better like dogs! Everyone seems to be being sent dog handling at the moment.

Make the most of your Basic Training at Halton ... it's the last time you'll have non-copper friends! :pDT_Xtremez_15:

Mate do yourself a favour, if you want to be a plod join the proper police !
I'm an ex rigger, my best mate is ex RAFP, if he was on here he'd tell you the same. I'm sure Chip will tell you that as well.
Pay stuff must have changed since I left 3 years ago, there weren't any RAFP on anywhere the same amount of money each month. I was a JT rigger.

On the subject of money, I get more now than I did in the mob. If I work overtime I get paid for it. I don't go to **** holes anymore. Last month I was being taught to drive up the A1M at 140 mph, and being paid for it. I've just done my stinger course, and will soon be going on a PSU course (riot training). This month I got 700 quid extra in overtime !

My advice, if your joining the RAF you might as well work on aircraft. I did it for 15 years and never once regretted it. You'll have a trade that pays 30K a year plus when you come out.
If you want to be a copper, join the police proper. If you want to open and close a barrier, play playstation and have no friends apart from RAFP the join the RAFP.

If you wanna be a copper, then join a real police force. If you wanna join the RAF, then join as something that will give you a proper trade, and semi-decent pay, that you can utilise in civvy street, or build on whilst in the RAF ie. college etc.
Join up, train up, and then get out while still young.
Oh, and yes, travel the world free of charge....hehehe
