Funeral music ?

Following the death of my mother in law one of the hardest things to do was pick the music. I had no input thank goodness but my missus and her family nearly came to blows over the 3 tunes to play. For that reason I decided to choose my own in advance and save arguments.

I've settled on these 3 to start the service, period of reflection and play me out.

Serious options
1 Funeral for a friend - Elton John
2 Teo Toriatte - Queen
3 Spirit in the sky - Norman Greenbaum.

Not so serious
1 My Sharona - the Knack
2 Who wants to live forever - Queen
3 Tubthumping - chumbawumba

So come on guys/gals what are you going to shuffle off to

My late uncle, who was a big rock'n'roll fan had
1. As the crem conveyor belt started moving "Great balls of Fire"
2. As the curtains closed behind him "Smoke gets in your eyes"

Dress of the day loud Hawaian shirts for us blokes and party frocks for the ladies. He liked a party did Terry.

Don't know about me just yet but maybe it's time to have a ponder on such things.

Mine:

1. Holding back the years-simply red
2. The long and winding road-the Beatles
3. All along the watchtower-Jimi Hendrix

Reasons for all three but also favourites from different stages of my life.

Not so serious-

1. Sweet Caroline-Neil Diamond (this might actually make the cut, big red sox fan)
2. Stay young- oasis
3. Don't stop til you get enough- Michael Jackson

I have picked the music for mine.

On entry, the morners shall be regaled by Monty Python's Sit on my face.

During the service, its the Muppets theme

And to end, Roy Wood's going down the Road with the message at the end!

All because, I want to be cremated without any fuss and my ashes spread to the four. however, the religious amongst my family want a proper one, despite the fact that I am an atheist!

My son tells me he's picked mine: "Teach your children", Crosby Stills & Nash.

I think I'd like "The Fox", by Steeeye Span. The last verse, complete with te rolling chorus "Never give in".

Have already decided on mine....

As being carted down the aisle.... Always look on the bright side of life.
As being cremated..... Burn baby burn, disco inferno.

Also Hawaiin themed. A celebration of life not a mourning.... :pDT_Xtremez_30:

My mum passed away a couple of years ago, and gave instructions that that she wanted ‘abide with me’ during the service as the coffin was lowered, and “so long, it’s been good to know you” as people left, which was very typical of her sense of humour.

For me though, I’d like:

  • Coffin entry : “Jeresulem” – I love that hymn, had it at my wedding, and it’s hard to be sad while belting it out at the top of your lungs - I don’t believe a funeral should be a sad affair.
  • Reading: “Miss me, but let me go” (http://www.funeralhelper.org/remembrance-miss-me-but-let-me-go-unknown.html)
  • Coffin going away (through curtains / down to incinerator etc): an extract from Vangellis - “The conquest of Paradise”, which is exactly what I intend to be doing in the afterlife, wonder if they have a decent bar there?.
  • As people leave: Something like Elton John’s ”Song for Guy”, simple music to walk out to, and anyone who doesn’t get out in a timely manner to make way for the next funeral gets treated to the only words, which come near the end of the song – and are a reminder that “Life, is a temporary thing”

12 o'clock..............................Vangelis
Shostakovic piano concerto no2 in F major................by who else!

In my years as as coroners officer it never ceased to amaze me how few people prepared for moving on thereby leaving their next of kin with loads of hassle and squabbling over what should be done!
