6 Month Tours for non formed RAF Personnel

So the latest Personnel Bulletin confirms that non formed personnel are now to carry out 6 Month Operational Tours. This has been talked about for a while but now it's in writing. To be honest, a 6 Month Tour in Las Malvinas makes me feel sick! Can't imagine for 1 minute that this will help PVR rates, and downgraders for that matter!!!

Unless the Stacker trade is going to expand it ain't going to happen for us. As a feasibility study was done some time ago when this was first mentioned. We would have to have an extra 7 Stackers in MPA to cover specialists Q's. So unless were gonna get reamed or bigger I can't see this affecting us. That said never say never.

Does it say if individuals already notified for 4 month OOA's will be amended in duration or is it new notifications?

Did 7 months in MPA - it was a breeze, and a lot of fun once one got used to the idea.

Course, I didn't have to live like a Long Kesh inmate and had no ties to the UK. That's going to need looking at.

There is an article about it on the RAF Personnal Bulletin dated Autumn 2013 --- Mad_Collie there is a link on the unit moss page

My understanding is that it would be a phased introduction. More detail to be published separately.

I've just come back from a NFU 6 month tour, but that was as I was attached to a unit of IA Army (1 RAF, 8 Army) that was a laugh a minute!

I knew you'd have time to find it, you work shy get ;-)

I only questioned it because I've had 2 of my lads DWRd in the last couple of weeks & they are both 4 month dets, down saarrff & 'eric.

To widen the scope of this thread...

Will this move benefit you in the end by ensuring you go for longer but fewer times or is it papering over the cracks of being short of deployable people?

I think there may be an official and unofficial answer to this....

It will still be the same people going, only for longer. The sick remain sick and more go sick due to the longer time away - 4 months was acceptable to some. How do i know this? My trade went to 6 monthers and it's the same faces i see on det all the time :( I got back last May, had 2 months away at the begining of the year, 3 weeks in the office and was given 48hrs notice for a 4 monther which i have only recently just returned from!

I'd expect turnaround times to grow by half overnight, but then 6 monthers will only create more sick, lame and lazy.

Never done a 6 monther, done 5 and that was hard, done 10 weeks and they were a lot more manageable.
But surely there should be less slots soon?

Too long for me, but it will depend on the person.
If you leave a working partner and have kids it is a nightmare for childcare and soon eats up the LSA. Even though my wife was pretty awsome there were times things just got too much. There is only so much friends and family can do. for free and single it's a 6 month savings plan to then go on a mad spending spree when they got home.

Again one of my last holidays had a 6 month training commitment, all over the place, before I even stepped on the plane.

Another nudge towards the door IMO. 4 months has worked for ages, I see no reason to change it.

The current CBFSAI prefers having RAF in posts over Army apparently. Mainly because a post has someone in it for 12 months of the year. If you put a pongo on a 6 month tour in a post they have 2 weeks R and R. It means an Army post is only filled 11 months of the year.

What does that mean?
