As an extract from the article;

Defence strategists believe that in the next 50-years future conflicts will be similar to those of Iraq and Afghanistan involving a mixture of low and high tech capability but where large troop numbers will be essential.

Compare and contrast with the last 'Next war' projections by strategists

Fortunately, history can show us the way. Ninety years ago, in the aftermath of the First World War, and facing similar financial stringency in the 1920 estimates, Winston Churchill, Secretary of State for War and Air, introduced the “Ten Year Rule”. It required the Forces to make their plans on the assumption that there would be no great European war for the next ten years. It was a way of smoothing out the equipment programmes over the medium term, with the aim of having the Forces ready for war in ten years’ time.

And I do believe that for the first 3 years of '39-45' we were battered.

Mr Masher

I just read that link that you posted about the RAF /Navy taking the biggest hit,

i missed that one too but at the bottom of that link this was a message that just speaks so true of the current situation

"A senior officer said: "All we have had from the new defence secretary are hints and sideswipes at the military. We have troops fighting and dying on operations and unless some direction and leadership, rather than the constant regurgitation of how bad things are within the military, some troops will legitimately ask 'what's the point' when their future is in doubt."

I starting to think that wishing for the Tories to be in power was a major mistake for us RAF types

Whoever got in meant pain, it's just the severity and timing that was variable.

Agreed even the most brain dead chav knows Great Britain PLC has debts which we must pay back. Though the honourable member for Kirkcaldy has yet to grasp this simple concept.

The timing couldn't be better

The Russian government has approved a 65 per cent increase in the country's defence budget over the next three years as it rushes to upgrade its ageing Soviet-era military machine.

The spending boost is part of an ambitious £276 billion rearmament programme to re-equip Russia's conventional forces between now and 2020.

Analysts forecast the Kremlin will target spending in the next three years on the navy, the air force and on the space sector. The navy is waiting for a new batch of nuclear submarines and a new sea-launched ballistic missile, while much of Russia's Black Sea Fleet needs overhauling.

Oh how things never fail to amaze me. It's just like a big game of chess. Now the fun will begin.

The annual budget will rise from the equivalent of £26 billion this year to around £43 billion in 2013 with much of the money earmarked for major hardware and equipment upgrades in the army, navy and air force.

Now then, these are figures from the largest country on earth. Are they getting far better value from their defence contractors given the larger orders for new aircraft etc? Or, are we getting ripped off by our contractors (link to DII thread?).
