Over the years I've seen some rediculous costs being charged to the mod for spares which look like they cost a couple of quid. Today one of our lads walked in from stores looking pretty shell shocked as he saw the cost of a wire brush he had demanded for a job. After looking at the Supply sheet the price came to a paltry sum of £164.375.

After a quick search on Amazon and the exact same brush was on sale in the states for just over 2 dollars. Money well spent I think.

Obviously this may have been d of q 100 but it was still funny to see the look on the lads face.

Any others you find please post them up here.

It isn't just the MOD Wobbly. I work for a company in Australia and we recently asked for a quote for several sets of blanks for the engine.
To give you some idea of the quote we received, they wanted €564 for one red, 7mm alumininum screw! We wanted 180 of them!! Needless to say we are looking elsewhere!

A seaking has rubber sleeves to protect the blade dampers. A simple check of the label reveals a cost of nearly £1000.

You could go and buy a universal cv joint boot for less than a tenner which would effectively do the same job.

I recall in 1980 checking the cost one nylon pax seat (just the fabric) for a Puma, and being astunded to find it was £600 (from the surrender monkeys obviously).

Even now, that would get you a very nice corner unit from DFS at 0% interest (and they wouldn't have to start paying for it until after it had gone out of service)

What about when (If) a job card on 'Leave It To Someone' else needs reopening for whatever reason? £10,000 a pop last I heard.......

Slightly off topic, but in a similar vein.......

In a previous life I was a Parts/procurement Manager for Siemens trains. We were paying £466 for plastic bog seats for the Heathrow Express trains from the supplier (CAF in Spain). Unfortunately (for them) after taking delivery of 2 new spares I noticed they'd forgotten to take the sticker off one of them. I immediately rang up the company in Surrey and bought another one for £8.25p !!

I'd upload the DII catalogue, but I'm on DII :pDT_Xtremez_42:

To add one DII workstation (workstation, 17” flat screen, keyboard and mouse) costs £485 (exc VAT) and then £140 per month. An additional £762.72 is charged for port acvtivation.

If you want to move your DII workstation to another desk where a DII tap isnt available it will cost £107.74. An additional £762.72 is charged for port acvtivation.

A 17" TFT monitor will cost £228.54 plus £64.75 for Atlas to install it.

Whilst I agree with the foregoing parts/spares rip off, I think it should be born in mind that when 'they' arrive at a price, it includes all the 'hidden extras', such as Admin. costs etc..
That said I still think it's a bloody rip off.

I remember getting an airway bill breakdown for the 503 when we where sending one out to KAF. A stepladder, an ordinary plain stepladder that would cost you no more then £30 in B&Q....£1680. How can this be justified?

I think some of it lies in things having to be, "MilSpec"....

A hammer is a hammer to you and I, but if some bone head says the hammer must weigh 1kg to within a gram then that's where the trouble starts.

There should be some items that supply can purchase directly from B&Q or Tescos. Tools however must be of a certain quality and if someone sees a load going cheap but break on the first go that's no good either.

Maybe there should be a techie assigned to supply for looking at tool purchases?

Just an idea....

I've seen some cluster f*** contracts in my time but that one takes the proverbial. I only wish this thread was in the non-public area as polite language cannot do justice to the level of incompetence on the part of the MoD's contract writers for DII.

There was an MT Tech Chief who was involved with the selection of the toolboxes that the heavies in MTMS now use, and they have to be the worst bits of kit I have ever seen. Completely unbalanced and top heavy and tools made of chocolate, one of the lads snapped a spanner at my last place and it looked like a Cadburys Wispa inside.

You have to make sure you pick the right techie, but then that's maybe one of the reasons they got rid of the trade:pDT_Xtremez_14:

It's not rocket science, Snap On or equivalent, lifetime guarantee, it's what car mechanics use, simple.

Just like the Snap On Ratchets we get through supply at the moment! Just as well we aren't etching tool kit numbers onto them and invalidating the warranty!:pDT_Xtremez_42:

If asked for, the toolkit numbers etc can be etched (laser or whatever ) on demand and don't invalidate the warranty, they already 'etch' the nsn.

I was on K line at Lyneham, and we got sent the wrong cup holder, the one we received was for a Tri star and on the label the unit price was just over £600.
The cup holder was just a 6" x 4" piece of plastic try with upturned sides and 2 screw holes.
