Well, i've finally done it! PVR... out in November, and I cannot wait. Feels like a weight off my shoulders.

Now then, trains or Powerstations, thats the next question!

Railways mate. The amount of investment in infrastructure particularly in the next 20 - 30 years is going to be massive!

Rolling stock is okay and well paid, but as I found its dirty and very unsociable hours wise! I now work in the infrastructure side and its much more agreeable.

Bitburger works in infrastructure as well...there are a few more Goaters working within the industry that could give you advice.

I could throw a counter point of view to MontyPlumbs and say Power Stations.
The nuclear station build coming up (whether you agree with it:pDT_Xtremez_30: or not) wind turbiines (biggest con going:pDT_Xtremez_06:) and new build ccgt at various locations - all depends what sector of the service you are looking at!?!

Oh come off it Tashy, there's nothing great, glorious and good about the off-shore oil/gas/comms industry other than the money. Weeks away from home just wishing your life away every night until you get home at which point you're always conscious of the fact that in 2/3/4 weeks you're away again for another 2/3/4/whatever weeks away again. Jeez, swapping 4 months in the Stan for a lifetime of boats/rigs/etc!! The bloke across the road from me went away at the beginning of Jan and doesn't get home again til April... for a month!! Ask your missus how great it really is not having hubby/dad around. No doubt you've got the "retiring at 55 plan" in mind? Good luck on that one, sad that for half of the next 15 years you won't be around to see your kids and missus growing old.

Anyhoo, horses for courses as they say. :pDT_Xtremez_26:

Well done. You're one of those who actually got off his ar5e and did it instead of moaning about how bad it is but never having the nuts to leave.

Just don't apply too early for jobs as you'll probably be disappointed, I would start applying at the 3 months or less point.

Good luck.

Best of luck!

Best of luck!

Best of luck to you.

At least I'm not the only one who doesn't know what he wants to do when he grows up and leaves the RAF.:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Mind you I've got about 7 years left to decide!

Congrats

Congrats

Better than the Tesco's or Asda's choice i was looking forward to as soon as I pass that pension day!

Ref offshore? I have known many guys who end up splitting up with their other half once they have to spend every day together! It works for some and can be healthy if you need some time away every now and again. Not for me though....

If I can add to the offshore thing...

I've never worked offshore but used to work away alot and was home most weekends. However the then potential Mrs Shugster got fed up with being alone all the time and eventually buggered off.

There's a good reason why jobs like these pay lots of Money and it's because of the stress they can create at home and the years they can take off your your life expectancy, (When I worked in the US I had tons of money but no time to enjoy it. 70 hour weeks ain't fun). So choose wisely.

Knowing what I know today... If you're single then work your rear end off for a few years and you can aquire a fair amount of cash. If you're married then pick a job that either means being home every night or only being way for a week every now and then.

I've learned the hard way that money isn't everything.

Good for you mate, I wish you every success in you new career, whatever it may be. The way things are looking, as soon as the decent posting I'm in at the minute ends (12 yr point), I'll probably be following in your footsteps.

Personally I'm just about through the academic side of my EASA licence, but I'm also looking at the power industry... The old wind turbine thing isn't going away any time soon, irrespective of whether they're all they're made out to be, and there are lots of jobs advertised already, at about the 30k mark. :pDT_Xtremez_19:

Is this gen? I'm out next year, but at the moment all the lads I'm talking too, that are working off shore, say things are very very quiet.

I hope however that you are right!

My brother works in the oil industry and he was telling the orders for this year are already rolling in and it looks to be a good year for them.
