Jag Tails

Jag Tails

Thanks for that Mainjafad, just had myself a 'Firm' moment!

I'll double check if any of those aircraft have made them into the great West Midlands aviation training centre!

In fact I'm sure we have XX117 with a plain grey tail (sad sight that!).

It's a shame they couldn't all be saved for posterity.:S

I remember when 6sqn's Tail came into AMF for minor. I got told off for exchanging the word 'Can-openers' for 'Circus'. We had to remove it before any of us got a picture!:pDT_Xtremez_32:

All of them are now at Cosford including XZ112 (Colt 65th Anniversary tail), plus the Jaguar OSD aircraft XX119 (Spotty Jag) and XX725 in the pink scheme with Mik's 'Miss Can openner' nose art.

As regards Jag Specials, I was asked back in 2007 to do profiles of all of the Special tails, which I did in about three weeks. Most of them below, except of the one that was done as result of a schools art completion, which was only on the aircraft for one day and I’ve never seen myself.

"Miss canopeners" avionics bay door was removed when XX725 got to Cosford. Prior planning ensured that a U/S door was painted and ready to replace it. The artwork is at Conz waiting like the 90th aniversary tail for the reformantion of 6 Sqn.

'Black' Aircraft!

'Black' Aircraft!

I loved the black jag, looked very cool

I also remember a couple of years later when one of the Leucharse squadrons decided to do an all black F3.

It was a cluster from beginning to end!

Radome couldn't be painted black and remain serviceable... so they had a U/S one painted for photo's to be taken and every time it flew they had to change the Radome back to a grey one.

It also had a tendency to overheat the ECS system.

We also found that the painters had kindly painted over some of the 'DO NOT PAINT' areas!

And finally we heard that they hadn't received permission from STC, so they had to have it stripped and repainted grey!

Still laughing now....:pDT_Xtremez_30:

The all black Tomb that reside in the old QRA shed at Leuchars was spectacular.

What happened to it after the shed got knocked down?

The Tornado was an example of how not to do a ceremonial paint scheme. CinC,STC at the time, had to authorise any such design. Futher more the Camoflage Working Group (Basically the headquaters for paint schemes for the RAF) had to authorise it as well. The proceedure was in a little known command instruction (a pain to find on the intranet). Also the aircraft had to be weighed post paint (that the squadron involved didn't do, is what I was told) IAW the JAP (more than 25% of the airframe sprayed). When the A/C was weighed, it was out of limits on its moment (having already flown, I believe). I can't remember if it was the Tremblers or the Fighting Cocks..

Checked out Google and found that it was 43(F). I'm not surprised that it wasn't sorted. Their SEngO at the time was infamous. My lot were out on Magic Carpet with them in early 2006 and moral with the 43 engineers was lousy. One of our Execs had gone to Uni with the gentleman in question and stated "that he was a little bit of a atmosphere hoover".

All the 43 Lineys had SIAT written on their Hi Viz'es..

SEngO Is A TW*T.....:pDT_Xtremez_09:

The artist we had on the Bucc wing during GW1 was a rigger on 208 Sqn called Kenny Latham, he named all the nice girlies so not sure of the origin.

We did have one of the aircrew types do one called 'Laser Lips Laura' which wasnae a bad attempt but looked very poor next to the rest of Kenny's nose art.

Kenny also had a roaring trade in ear defenders painted with some very voluptuous leather/chain mail clad females in front of stunning scenery.

I wonder if he's still painting and if he ever made money out of it?

Black Mike is still on Tremblers HAS site.

Radome couldn't be painted black and remain serviceable... so they had a U/S one painted for photo's to be taken and every time it flew they had to change the Radome back to a grey one.

What nose art was John Peters and John Nichol's Tornado wearing when it was serving in GW1 before it was shot down?

Does anyone remmember the all black Buccaneer from 15 or 16 squadron in the early 1970's? It was nicknamed "The John Player Special" on account of it having an uncanny resemblance to the said brand of fags. Needless to say, the big hats disapproved and the scheme was hastily removed.

My personal fav!

Guinness Girl (Pauline) isa one I saw at Cosford museum. Rumour had it that when various panels were opened up, lots and lots of sand fell out.

Sadly, the delightful curves were "complained of by a lady visitor". Fortunately, common sense (and a historical thought) prevailed and her curves were lightly covered by something pretty transparent.

As far as I know she's still there, although I don't recall seeing her last time I visited. I'll check on it.
