Was lucky enough to spend 18 months on BBMF, flying in the Lanc was an experience I'll never forget, my favourite spot was the rear gunners seat, it really opens your eyes when you see how cramped it is. Anyway, it was great to see her fly over my house yesterday resplendant in her new colours, the sight and sound of her never fails to bring a lump to the throat.

Hi, TD, glad to see you hanging around here. We have a tendency to romanticise things and the aircraft of BBMF engender emotions in those of us too young to remember WW2 that frankly are completely irrational.
I hope in time you will be able to look at the Lanc with pride that your son flew in the only other airworthy one in the world. Until that day, our thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Why irrational. Is it wrong to feel emotion? Tappers Dad has my every sympathy and I feel for him as I do for every parents loss, be it wartime or peacetime. I just don't understand your statement, pride-wrong? Emotion-wrong?

The Lancaster bomber, like all its predecessors and successors, is a machine of war. In short, its purpose was to facilitate killing. I feel as much pride as anybody else when I see the Lanc over my house or the Typhoon display pilot showing off. Tapper's Dad reminded me of the human cost of what we do. Surely it is not rational to feel pride in others' suffering?

The ex Scampton gate guardian NX611 was on loan fromn the Panton brothers. The aircraft was dismantled by smash & crash and transported to its new home at RAF East Kirby.
Ground runs are carried out on a regular basis with the opportunity to sit in the aircraft while it is taxying (at a cost).
Afraid I can't remember the exact date of removal from Scampton, but I do have the pics somewhere at home.

Hehe, nothing like a 10 year servicing, suprised they did that kind of thing during the war!
PureMagic, Steve, although I think it would have been nice to see something land after the Op (but that's me being optimistic).
It's the first time I've seen colour footage of a Lanc of that era.
She was serviced at Air Atlantique and they had some sort of WebCam on her, although I never managed to get a decent image.
