"Tax evasion means concealing income or information from tax authorities — and it's illegal. Tax avoidance means legally reducing your taxable income."

And i'd be willing to bet a lot of the members of this very site have done just that by adjusting pension/earnings to maximise income.

Nit picking mode but tax avoidance is legal tax evasion is illegal. Just depends how clever your accountant is and the really clever ones cost.

I remember probably about 30 years back when some high-earning footballers we partially paid in gold sovereigns.

It is well known that a sovereign is legal tender with a bank value of £1.00 but with a gold value at the time of about £800.00.

Their taxable income was a lot lower because they were paid in sovereigns and many people didn't realise that wages paid in gold weren't subject to income tax.

Is that scenario tax avoidance or tax evasion?

Angry people like to make general statements like this, and there’ll be some vaguely related stat, that if you dont dig too deep might support your PoV.

But in reality, we got the biggest state, taking the biggest share of GDP ( yours and my money) since after WW2.

And its still not working, more money and more state obviously aren’t the solution, but this is what a lot of people are asking for.

There needs to be a time when folding is a better option than chasing your loses.

We have the biggest share of GDP because these pesky old feckers just wont die when they turn 70, instead draining the state for an additional 15 years' unbudgeted state pension, whilst simultaneously draining the state of NHS funding prolonging their existence.

Would you prefer lower taxes and compulsory Euthanasia Busby?

Interesting take, not my area of specialism, I’m sure there’s a solution out there, other countries seem to have found it.
