In the current proxy war being waged in Syria, is the capture of 48 Iranians "on a pilgrimage" (in a warzone!!) the most implausible explanation ever given by a nation?

Nobody wants the Kurds to have a state, they've already got a defacto one in Iraq if they get an oil producing chunk of Syria then it'll be Iran next, which could be good, and then Turkey, which would be very bad.
