Not normally pleased to see people lose their jobs but when you've been peddling misery i quite happy about this lot losing theirs.

William Hill plans 700 store closures putting 4,500 jobs at risk https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48868335

Can we finally rid ourselves of the atrocity that is W H Smith as well? I still have no idea about what their business model is and I a feeling that they don’t either.

Do Sgt's Messes still have 'one-armed bandits' in them? Being private clubs, the payouts were much larger, and IIRC there were a few problem gamblers who fed the things. I got into a discussion with one concerning probability and how the machines never lost. He waved £100 in my face a few days later, but couldn't understand my point that it had actually cost him many £00's to win it.

Not unusual to see the same three or four playing the machines at all hours in the mess, every mess had its addicts.

And at the same time buying a bar of chocolate from the shelf next to the pens and perhaps the latest teen fiction from the shelf above. Honestly, I don’t know who decided on how their stores display the wares they sell but there doesn’t appear to be much thought behind it.

I saw a clip on the box that stated that in some Smith's you can still buy tax disc holders for your car....

It's quite simple, they sell bottled water at inflated prices at train stations and motorway service stations, sometimes you even get a free newspaper. oh and they sometimes sell CD's for those who haven't heard of spotify and have a car with that particular 30 year old technology.

What makes me laugh is that they talk of closing down betting shops, but the talk here is about the revival of the plan to build a super casino in Blackpool as part of the town's ongoing revival...

Because that’s exactly what Blackpool needs isn’t it. A place full of desperate unemployed people with drug and alcohol problems. Morons.
