Due to the downturn in education standards in this country do you think we are now suffering from years of namby pamby PC ideas about how the kids of today should be taught?

The recruitment and retention of suitably qualified teachers has become more difficult; the situation is considerably more serious in London

· Teacher shortages are leading to the increased use of temporary supply teachers and the use of permanent teachers to teach subjects in which they are not qualified; this commonly leads to weaker teaching, lower expectations and less effective learning.

· In secondary schools, there is still "significant underachievement" in seven schools in a 100, with a wide gap between girls and boys

· The time available to teach almost all of the foundation subjects in primary schools is coming under pressure from the drive to raise standards of English and maths.

·.

Apparently the best ways for girls to learn is in an all girls school, and boys learn best co-ed. so do you lower the girly standards and mix, or let the boys fail an seperate them?

I had a mix education up till secondary, then went to a girlie school, then a co-ed college, which is something the spams are trying out to get their exams results up. sod the blokes LOL

My daughter is reaching the end of her teaching degree. I know what she has to put up with on her placements, as stated earlier the hands are tied in many ways. However class sizes do make a difference and, at the risk of starting this again, so does background and location. She has worked at schools in very poor areas and also in very well off, private, schools. She says, in many ways, the kids are the same, its peer pressure and family life that can make a difference to how they take stuff in.

I was curious that's all, since you went to the local Comp, how do you know the all boys/all girls grammar schools worked? As to your question why? I am wondering why you are asking me why?

Only by the results tables published every year in our local newspapers. The top performing schools were the Grammar schools.

As to you asking me why. Why are you wondering why I am asking you why to your question why?

Yes I agree with the Ofsted report 2000-2001 too - although is it a bit outdated now?

Nerdy-GET ONE OF YOUR OWN YOU PLEB

The best approach is to find an expression used by Nerdy that sounds relatively (and dare I say it uncharacteristically) bright then do a quick google search. Either there are an awful lot of people out there plagerising Nerdy's posts or our friend the Nerd has been doing a spot of cut and paste himself. What do we think?

Now, I'm all for opening up a discussion with a bit of research but if the only way you can make yourself sound intelligent is to hi-jack other people's ideas and opinions, well, that's kind of sad don't you think?

Nerdy doesn't need one being the fountain of ALL knowledge and is NEVER wrong (in his/her own mind).

As for referring to Nerdy as 'a pleb', that's a bit weak - how about 'an ******** with nothing better to do than troll in a RAF forum'?:pDT_Xtremez_15:

Pity?

Pity?

Isn't it a pity that two people can pull down a decent thread by getting agitated and personal?

Seems the whole site is going this way too. It's getting quite hard to find a decently constructed and logically argued thread - and when you do find one - two 'agitated' people spoil it by petty slander.

Getting back to this thread -
We have been feeling the effects of PC teaching techniques for many years now, and that's why you don't have the same "Quality" in all your staff/ranks as your predecessors had, whether it be by academic or physical atttributes.

I think there is still a shortage of Teachers but the shortfall is being taken up by the clever use of Teaching Assistants in some areas. This is wrong (IMO) but I believe it's happening.

Many children are affected by their family backgrounds - and thats what makes us all individuals to some extent. Teaching should take these differences into account but should not be diverted by it.

Unfortunately many of these students are seemingly 'encouraged' to be less than self-efficient and more reliant on others doing things for them. This has led to a malaise among many of "Todays Kids", many of them requiring almost constant praise and respect instead of earning both by personal performance and standards. This is the largest problem I have noticed.

Very few of the younger kids wants to actually do work, and want to do some computer 'stuff' instead.

Don't get me wrong - there is a time and place for IT - But we shouldn't let IT rule our lives and it won't undo a nut & bolt easily!

Basically - Many (not all) "Kids" don't seem to have the same work ethic (IMO) due to PC Teaching AND Parent./Lifestyle standards.

I sit back and wait for the obvious whinging now.

And , Yes - I may be older than you - but I came from a White immigrant family (and we got all the Black immigrant problems) and worked very hard to get to my current position.

Hey this is fun. I have a stalker!!!!!!!!!!!!!Puter killer. I am not sure what all that guff is about puter killer. You know the stuff about opinion show phonetics? Any clues? Which website would you like to visit next puter killer? You do this as though I am really bothered.

You see it comes down to what the kids and university students are doing all the time now. Why bother doing all the hard work if someone has already written down what you want to say.

Anyway do you think that putting control of the schools back into the hands of the head teachers is a good idea? Letting them spend the money how they see fit is surely a better way of doing business.

DoesMyBumLookBigInThis sorry couldnt find any more up to date figures.

Over to you puter killer. I bet he cant resist in answering but will it have any relevance to the topic in hand? We will see.:pDT_Xtremez_28:

Rigga makes some good points. Many kids (my own included) are unable to take any form of criticism or even advice, due to the PC brigade insisting everything you do, right or wrong, has value. Now this is correct, if you learn by your mistakes, but many don't, they continue to do the same things under the misaprehension they will get a different outcome. Ask a teenager why they have no homework and it will be the teachers fault, ask them, then, why they have 15 different pieces to complete by the next morning, it's the teachers fault again! Perhaps we should go back to some of the older values, punishment for wrong doing (rather than praise for not doing something wrong) and alow the teachers a little more power in their classroom. Oh, and like the RAF, cut back on some of the bean counters and employ real teachers, not semi qualified TA's. Don't get me wrong, TA's are a good idea, but as well as, not instead of, teachers.
