Has anyone heard about this.....

League to consider penalty shoot-outs

Lord Brian Mawhinney has revealed Football League clubs have agreed to consider a revolutionary proposal for penalty shoot-outs to decide all drawn matches as part of a wider review aimed at making the game more entertaining.

A meeting of the 72 league chairmen agreed to a working party being set up to consider the proposal put forward by Football League chairman Mawhinney, which would see all drawn matches in professional league games outside the Premiership go to a shoot-out.

Mawhinney said: "I suggested that for drawn matches each team gets a point and then maybe the team that wins a penalty shoot-out gets an extra point. Managers may hate shoot-outs but fans love them."

He added: "The chairmen decided to use this proposal to have a broader look at a range of ideas that might refresh our product.

"Some people were strongly against it, some people were in favour of it but on both sides people said 'let's be constructive and have a broad examination of what we have on offer'."

The league's working party will now seek other ideas from clubs and fans but will be limited by the rules of the game - for example they would not be permitted to abandon the offside rule.

Mawhinney said it was important to constantly seek to improve the entertainment on offer.

He added: "We cannot afford to be complacent - people are always talking to be about how we can get more goals and more excitement in football.

"I understand that it is not instinctively where clubs would go but if you don't change in a changing world then you can fall behind."

That won't bother littlewoods, they'll just use the score at the end of regulation time.

I think it's a crap idea to go to penalties. Drop a man from each team every 5 minutes of extra time, or have snipers in the crowd, that would make them play harder and earn their over sized salaries :pDT_Xtremez_30:

How about having the penalty shoot out before the game. Then both sides know who will be the winner if there is a draw, thus removing the option of playing for a draw. Should create more attacking football.

It's flippin' ridiculous and I note that in a rather patronising way the chairman of Bristol City has told Lord Mawhinney so.

There appears to be a group of suited bods who like nothing more than to introduce new rules and regulations on the 'beautiful game' just so they can make their mark. The game worked for years without interference, now we've got a f**ked up offside rule, silver goals, golden goals, bookings for what used to be considered a celebration but now is considered misconduct and now this. People making changes to something that already works just to make themselves look important, seems to be a common theme these days.::/:

This is a cr@p idea!

At the end of normal time they should play like we did when we were kids.

'Next one to score' wins. With no more substitutes it would then be down to fitness and desire to win.

As an aside, afternoon games shouldn't have the lights put on even if it starts to get dark.

And maybe use jumpers for goalposts........ No, thats just silly!

It really is a load of old b******s, not even a dog would like these!!! Just leave the damn game alone. Everyone hates penalty shoot outs and it proves nothing really. The skill in the game is ball control over a wide range NOT just kicking a ball from one particular spot otherwise we might as well just spend 90 mins taking b***y penalties after all!!!!!! Oops ...bit of a rant there!!

Neil Warnock speaking on Real Radio yesterday said something along these lines.

"They are trying to turn it American with scantilly clad girls dashing out shaking their pom poms well thats bloody hard work in sheffield! they ought to concentrate on stoping the divers and treating injuries whilst play carries on"

2 Very good points!

He may be a bit mental but can talk some good sense. Wish we could just revert the rules to pre-'96 (think that's when golden goals etc were introduced) and go back to a simple game of football where everybody, including some girls, knew what was going on. Think Ian Holloway and Neil Warnock are legends, but then I am a Pilgrim. UP THE ARGYLE!:pDT_Xtremez_28:
