China is ripping up an agreement signed by Margaret Thatcher in 1984 which set conditions for the hand over of Hong Kong to the PRC in 1997.

Many people in Hong Kong are de facto BNO so this has massive implications for the UK as China stamps its authority over HK.

Is China going too far with this and what will the outcome be for the UK when it comes down to defending its interests?

Early reports are suggesting that we might be offering citizenship to the BNO population, circa 300k, although some would have had families since then so the number could be higher.

Quite a symbolic gesture.

China would love HK to be governed using the same oppressive, totalitarian system the rest of the country lives under. This was always the fear that once we handed over they would come down hard on the citizens of HK the only surprise, to me, is they have waited this long to do it. As for Dominic Rabbs offer to circa 300K HK citizens to come here nice gesture but the practicalities and logistics of moving and integrating that many folk would be a huge challenge

The PRC were always going to stamp there authority, or should that be Iron Fist, on HK no matter what bits of paper were signed by the then 'democratically' elected leader. You can never trust the 'Yellow Peril' they will always lie and cheat, (eg, dodgy CE Markings on dodgy junk electric stuff, dangerous baby milk formula, lead paint on kids toys and of course Covid-19).

The UK did complain during the last set of demonstrations. All China did was tell us to pi55 off as it was their country. Dont see what else we can do?

The right wing would likely be uproar if we let 300K people into the UK so cannot see a workable solution to this. Plus if we did this China would call our bluff with mass expulsions of the BNO community.

What did we think would happen? China is an authoritarian, autocratic, communist dictatorship. Tiananman Square should have shown us exactly what they are capable of. For some reason, a lot countries seemed to think that just because they wanted to do business with the West that were our friends. The scale of Chinese espionage would make a Russian KGB man blush and yet we allow them to come into our countries, buy up land , housing and companies.

I'm with T-B in that the surprise is that they have waited this long & considering how much the mainland has modernised since the handback. We no longer have any power to influence Beijing's internal governance and did well, I think, to get the deal we did - the alternative would have been being kicked out with no say in post-handback affairs whatsoever. We can only join the rest of the world in issuing condemnations and ask the UN to tut very loudly.

They’ve waited until they’re in a position where they can’t be pushed around.

Now social media companies are pulling out of HK seemingly concerned about just how much information the Chinese state maybe trying to harvest.

Tik tok is a Chinese company, operates under a different name in China
In China its called Douyin .
Tiktok is also a company trying to distance itself from the dark shadow of China, the Indian market is a key operating space for Tiktok.

With the recent incursion I think India might be a hard win for any Chinese company at the moment.
