I suppose the biggest irony is that if the Confederates had won the civil war, black lives would have value.

The sad truth of the matter is that after the death of Lincoln, the Confederacy pretty much had its own way in the South. The incoming President didn’t care much for the black people and it wasn’t until Ulysses S Grant became President that reconstruction efforts started. Even then he had to send the Army in to ensure that his wishes were carried out.
