What is it like at Cosford? Do you get your own room? Also do you get most of the weekends free?

Thanks

From what I've read of your posts you're thinking of joining as an AMM. At Cosford, unless you get lucky and get one of the few single man rooms, you'll be in a 4 man room that has been turned into a 5 man room by adding a bunk bed. You do get most weekends free though, unless you're here for the airshow, then you will lose about a month of weekends.

If you are coming from Halton then you will most likely be in a 5 man rooms as previously stated. The single man rooms are mostly for the SAC's returning to do further training and the permanent staff.

You will get most of your weekends off, but as stated you will have to work a few of them for different reasons such as air show preparation and the actual airshow itself. Cosford aint all that bad but just remember it still isnt the real RAF, its a training camp.

Ahh that clears it up a bit!

I had hoped it would be like uni-style accom. but 4/5 man isnt tooo bad. Do you still have to do stuff like inspections, kit prep and all that? Or does that sort of thing slacken off when you leave Halton?

I've been there, got the t-shirt etc...

As above, you will be in 4/5 man rooms. Some trainee blocks have the odd single man room, however I cannot confirm that the AMM blocks have these.

The first ten weeks you are there you will wear a 'biff badge'. You have more inspections, you are watched a bit more and your rooms have to be to a set layout etc. After ten weeks you have a thorough inspection and the badges are removed. Your bedspace can be personalised a bit, posters etc.

You will get most weekends off unless on things like airshow prep, RnI training, any extra duties.

You will have to march about but generally it is more relaxed than Halton. If you **** up however, there are Saturday morning 'do it again' parades.

Overall it's not a bad place, nice part of the country, plenty of clubs to get involved with.

Sausage2, I only asked those questions as nobody really mentions what Cosford is like. I didnt know wether it was a pretty laid back thing, or wether you carried on the strict discipline from Halton (dont mind either way :) ).

Also, I do road bike racing in the summer, do you think there would be places I could store a bike, so that I can go and race on available weekends?

Thanks for the replies

Yep you'll have like a little bike shed type thing as part of the block here at Cosford, Plenty of people use it for pushbikes and moterbikes too and you can chain it up.

I like the blocks at Cosford, theres a good amount of space in the rooms, inlcuding storage space and youll even have a choice of a bath or a shower :D

Cosford is a little slacker than Halton, but still not easy. Dont expect to be able to mince around the place, you still have to march and if you're seen messing around while in uniform youll get pulled up.

Good luck :D

Why not just turn up and find out. I just don't understand the need to know about every minute detail. When I first went to Swinderby I didn't even know where it was.

Yes, it's very curious that. And everybody want's to know everything in advance about the academics, the physical fitness pass levels and the standards of behaviour......

.......Now I wonder where this yearning to have all the answers in advance of all the tests comes from in a young person?

How does it bode for the person when, in the course of his/her future duty, they hit a situation with no clear answers?

Don't worry as soon as you leave Cosford you can kick back, relax and smoke a fat one; you even get to choose your own colour of uniform.

You're in the military mate; the discipline you learn at Halton shouldn't be forgotton just because you've left; as for laid back enjoy training because, depending on your trade, that's as laid back as you're gonna get.

I think you are tarring me with the wrong brush on this one. I didnt ask any bone questions about things like interviews, tests and all that. I just wanted to find out what the general gist of the place was. Unlike some, the idea of turning up at Halton not knowing whats going to happen makes it more exciting.

As with most things in the Forces, it is what you make it.

I'm old Airforce (Cold War Warrior) and at that time we lived in a variety of accomodation ranging from 16 - 4 man rooms and once when I was on a Station close down, I got Officers accomodation as they moved us all into the Mess, when everything else was closed down.

Cosford at that time was 16 man dormitories, but in common with the changes made in the mid 70's, the Blocks were changed over to 6 & 4 Man rooms but probably since my time they have probably made improvements.

Good Luck to you anyway.

Load of grumpy old gits on here,

Leave the lad alone.

I for one applaud people who get off their backside and do a bit of personal research.

I am just like ollie and will always try to plan future events in minute detail.

Better than turning up and being spoon fed rubbish gen by people that dont know any better.

And no it does not mean you cant think on your feet if you need to...:pDT_Xtremez_09:

The fact you aren't likely to have a single man room does have a positive side. At least you'll have some mates to socialise with.

When I was at Cosford there were single rooms for the Course Leader and Deputy and the rest were in a 12 man room. All 14 of us would regularly go as a group to the NAAFI, Wolverhampton and Albrighton. The few that stayed at weekend would still have a good time.

Your time in training will be the best of your RAF life, even if you don't appreciate it at the time, so make the most of it. Work hard and play hard.
