I'm all for any community work taken on by teenagers.

The Germans have a system where a random number have to do Military service or if they don't want to they can choose to work in hospitals, old folks homes, hostels etc.

Too many kids these days come from unemployed families and don't have any drive to go and carve out a career.

And it should be compulsory.

Was always against the idea of compulsory national service when I was in. I'd rather work with someone who was there cos they wanted to be rather than someone who was forced to be there against their will.

Agreed; the reason we have such a highly respected and even envied armed forces is due to having, on the whole, servicemen who want to be in the forces.

I would say I am against conscripts in the military but using them for community services would be a great idea!

As mentioned already, why should we get peole who do not want to be here. With out a change in punishments and the occasional fist/slap to the head it would just cause hassel.

However, a reward systme like the Yanks could be employed, the volunteer would recieve a grant for their time in. So home serveice emergency crews (hospital, ambulance and the like) would recive a certain amount for univeristy.

Home service Services NON op dets (these are just ideas for classification) would get a grant for unversity and would serve in the UK and other dets like the Falklands.

The a final catorgory of Service Ops, where a larger grant would be offered for full service where ever required.

Just a thought...now await the drubbing.

I agree that we're better-off as a full-volunteer military, but I also agree that there is a place for conscripts. I think that some sort of militart discipline would be great for a lot of lazy layabouts.

I remember many moons ago, not long out of basics (still training at Cosford I think) and I had been on a sesh in Luton with my best mate, who was in the Green jackets.

We were on a bus at the end of the day, laughing and giggling and just acting a bit ****ed (but not abusive). 2 old dears opposite said, loud enough for all to hear:

"They should bring back National Service, would stop this sort of thing!"

Oh how we laughed! :pDT_Xtremez_14:

I'm fully against Military National Service but I'm not sure Military Service is being mentioned in anything Cameron says.

Not sure either that the scheme proposed is going to be much use.

Who will volunteer? The ones that need to do something or may learn something won't.

If it was compulsory and for 6 months offering some sort of qualification and reward related to effort put in then it may be worthwhile. As it is it just looks like a way to replace paid workers with unpaid short termers like most schemes our new lords and masters are hiding under their people power banner.

Some very good comments so far.

I would support home service conscription as long as it was based on an 24 months maximum length of service with the option to leave after 12 months.

During their time as a conscript, the individual would take part in basic soldiering, airmanship or seamanship. Their food would be free, accom free and they'd get a basic payment per week along with travel home costs 6 times a year.

They would have the opportunity to take courses that will better prepare them for life in general whilst in a disciplined military environment and the ones who opt for the two years and have proved themselves, get a crack at the regulars.

I suppose an advanced Cadet service is really what I'm trying to describe, but the conscript would do the routine and basic jobs around an installation, freeing up the professional regulars to perform their primary duties.

Of course, this is only an idealistic viewpoint because it will cost money and won't generate profit. On the other hand, it could churn out individuals who give that value back upon exit to civvy street.

I am also in favour of civil service for those who would not like the military option.

No conscription my rationale is that why have people being forced into the military? times have changed it would never work. I am making an assumption here that the OPs reasoning was that conscription would somehow make society a better and safer place, it is not the Military's job to do that.

Having been out for a few years there are a couple of salient points to make here.

1. As a Service, you really do not want what is on offer on a push basis, even from the most allegedly educated populus. Young adults really are getting stupider and less aware of the dignity of sweat and honest labour.

2. In the civilian environment, I see only opportuinities to turn around the almost criminal educational philosophy of "always a winner" imbued by the secondary school system. People just cannot fathom the correlation between hard work and achievement any more, and the result would appear to be falling of the edge of society for many.
I am not a star, therefore I am not? I fear for dignity and honour.

So, point 2 is a goer. As an ex blu-dude, I would even volunteer, though of course not before the social services had checked my underwear.

Being a father of two teenagers I do not want my children going anywhere near the military let alone press ganged into it. If its a community work based service then I wouldn't object as it would allow the kids to gain skills and provide a service to their local communities.

However, my eldest starts his BTEC in motorsport engineering in September and after his second year he will be doing a work placement every weekend with a Formula Ford racing team which he will be paid for. If the Government go ahead with this national service would they have to compensate the kids that have already started on the first step of their career choice as they will have to bin college or their job and will, no doubt, be out of pocket.
