Right curteousy of Mad Collie and quite a few people off Ebay I'm in the camping game...

Now all I need is somewhere to go now...A great many campsites seem to big themselves up online so I'm after practical reccomendations...either you've stayed there or someone you trust has and told you all about it...

I want to somewhere with nice ablutions, that will take a largish tent, have power hook-up and a shop nearby as the basics...

Icing on the cake would be something outside of annoying me for my two boys (3 and 7) to do...something like a pool would be ideal but am open to ideas...pub nearby nice but not essential...I'm in Lincs and for run of the mill weekend camping don't want to drive to the other end of the country but for half terms etc will go greater distances...I like Cornwall for instance and the nearer the sea the better...

Any gen much appreciated.

Cornwalls a bit of a trek, but one place I recall from the MR days, which was one of the few acceptable places we would camp, was Hill end in the Gower peninsula (for the climbing - yeah sure).

Beaches are good, quite the place for the surfing community and the pubs and cafes are jumping in the good weather with people who you don't associate with camping - i.e., the sane. Always seems to be warm as well.

Great memories (sigh).

This campsite has everything you could ask for, except the electrical hook-up (but if you need electricity then you're not really camping).

I was just about to suggest Great Langdale, I ve stayed there loads of time's.
There is another camp site in Pencelli, Brecon Beacons ( HERE ) It has a small petting farm and a canal for fishing and walking to the pub, the town has 3 pubs from what I remember, and the ablutions are very nice.

I'm bored of the highlife...Over 2 decades of top hotels and circling the globe has lead me to want to rough it in a field covered in sh1t whilst listening to the rain on the flysheet!

If you're ever around N Wales and in particular the Llyn Penninsula, try Bolmynydd Camping very highly recommended, all families or couples, no single sex parties allowed, pub and shops within walking distance, as is the sea, the view is over Cardigan Bay and best of all, the showers are fantastic, they're not on a timer or anything, toilets are spotless. I always stay here when I go camping over Abersoch way.

Vim,

If you fancy a summer trip across the channel to Normandy... try here mate...

Close to the D-Day beaches etc.... and he's an blue suiter (rigger though, so you have to give him some leeway though). I also hear he has got his own cider orchard as well ;)

Try Toms Field in Langton Matravers Vim. Not overly sophisticated but well run by friendly people and there's loads to do in the locale!

That does look good and might be a place for the forthcoming half term experimental trip...

Went to France last year with Eurocamp and although a nice part of the world (Vendee) it was the cost of everything that put a damper on things...It wasn't just expensive it was restrictively expensive...That is the point where I lose patience with the frog standing in front of me asking for 6 euros for a stella or 12 euros for a small cooked chicken in the supermarket...blatant profiteering on those people on holiday...not even us brits would rip off people to that extent and I speak from experience having grown up in the lakes and lived in Newquay for many years...

This place is pretty good. Plenty of woods, lakes etc and has electricity hookups. There is a town nearby that has most facilities.

Ringwood has a lovely site New Forest is great, it's near Poole with some lovely beaches. Dri Ski Slope, and when I went last you could watch banger racing too. Has its own pool, hook up, shop. bar type place, superb ablutions, Sainsburys nearby for BBQ supplies etc.

Go anywhere you'd like - but take Cycles and/or fishing gear.

Cycles are to travel to places easily and are in keeping with the camping ethos (and are easy to push back from pubs if you need to)

and the fishing gear...

is to throw it all into any lake/canal/river/hole and prevent those idiots from using it!

Mrs F suggested we go here to try all the kit out! I poo-poo'd the idea as I may as well put it up in the front garden and run an extention lead out of the front room window...

And talking of all the kit I picked up some roof bars from Beverley and a mahooosive roof top box from near Gainsborough yesterday...The box had to go in the back of the 'van' as there was no fixings on it to fit to the bars...Halfords want £20 for what look like thruppence haypenny's worth of u-bolts...

Does anyone have any of these things that they will just give me...I'm as tight as a ducks ar$e...tighter than S2 to be fair.

It's worth it to know if you have all the kit to go solo. It can be an expensive overlook with some things.

WRT the bolt fixings, sounds like you need to visit your friendly GSE section. Or post the dimensions then someone might be able to help . . .
