I would say lucky rather than successful but I'm sure the board will explain all after it releases it's findings. Some clues are in the pictures, no undercarriage doors are open for a start.

Well, I have no idea what really happened so I'll put my herc experience to bed and rightfully so. Let's wait till the board sorts this out.

But, I will say it again, I am happy that it's only an airframe that's damaged.

Would have been a safer landing if the wheels were down. All you need to do is reach out and pull the lever.

UUMMMM BZN 1 runway, LYE 2 runways...........................Future Brize? You go figure!

:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Brize actually has 2 runways if you want to be picky. 26 & 08. There is one surface though. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

Each 'approach' is a runway in it's own right with it's own approach lighting and equipment.
They just happen to have the same tarmac surface. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

4 runways as it happens, if you are a paddy or SH.

It's just that 2 of them have no approach equipment, are exceptionally short - but jeezus, they're the widest runways on the planet.

always helps to actually select the u/c down on finals....needless to say the BOI will play the trump cards of CRM, HF etc etc (doing too much with the same frame, multiple sorties, different crews and different training). I would imagine some extremely red faces around at the mo though. Glad only thing hurt was the BZN blacktop and some Aircrew pride though.

Probably speaking out of my ar$e but I always thought that Air Tragic were supposed to check if the a/c was in the correct config for landing (i.e. undercarriage down) as a back up to the onboard aircrew....

Anyone ?

Crack on..................:pDT_Xtremez_09:

According to this the aircraft had done two flyby's for the tower to confirm the gear was up. The aircraft was then sent to burn off fuel and then return to bzn.

Job done. Would you like to stand down the BOI or shall I?

Perhaps Lockheed should have put something inside the aircraft for the crew to visibly check if the U/C was up or down :pDT_Xtremez_42:

OK fair enough can't be arsed going and reading through pprune....it bores me..........how about manual deployment of gear that I thought was possible on the Herc ?

I've never read so much bum custard in my time.

Personally, rather than spout from my hoop (as proone is populated by the biggest hoop spouter's), I'll wait for what the BOI says thanks.

Try reading the link as you have already posted on that thread. The information was not from me, and I never stated that it was.

There is, it involves undoing some bolts and letting it freefall for the mains but can't remember for the nose. Then the loadie has to do a bit of work with chains and tensioners. Albert also has redundancy in the brakes, the emergency being run of the aux system. From my memory of how the K works I can only think it must have been a desparate state of affairs for it to land gear up, but what do I know?

A lot more than most of us it would appear FLT!

Just had a flashback as to how the nose undercarriage is manually released, it's a lever on the floor of the flight deck on the co's side hidden under a little flap. The tool used to hook the chains round the manually lowered gear is the same item often used to reset the wing isolation valves during an AF/BF. It's all coming flooding back to me now.

There is also a manual winding mechanism to lower the mains as well, full disconnect is the last resort.

So is Lyneham gonna stay open now they have trashed Brizes runway. If rumour has it David C will take charge on Monday and he will ensure that his continency or what the **** you call them , his zone , is free.
Since we are throwing all eggs into one basket then one needs to close just like us up at Lossie/Kinloss. God forbid you can have 2 airbases within travelling distance , its just in case you get a nuclear bomb dropped on you. keep them wide apart but have 3 bases. ok im getting cynical and im drunk sorry
