Currently on a 2 day course; it is at a commutable unit from home (so will not be staying at Unit overnight).

Can i claim IE?

I wasn't intending too claim, but some other course members are (those that are commuting too).

No

No

No you cannot as you are not staying away from home over night, I think it's paid per 24 hours. It'll be in the rules that you sign as a part of the claim process.

No you cant... hope this helps.

I too thought it was only on overnighters. But some on the course state it is for whenever you are away from Unit on course etc and is to be used for coffees, papers etc (as well as laundry, phone calls etc).

Will have to check the JSP on Monday.

IE is only paid per 24 hours spent away from parent unit, if you are commuting each day you will not be entitled to your £5

Put it into context... if you're commuting to the course on a daily basis then what are you doing that requires financial reimbusement (in the form of IE) which is different from a normal day at work? The only thing I can think of is paying out for teas and coffees - and that's only if you pay a monthly/weekly lump sum at work.

I've never understood why 'newspapers' fall under the IE banner, surely if you buy a paper on a daily basis when not on a course then buying one when on a course is just a continuence of that daily routine? No reason to get your money back IMO. Laundry, phone calls home and toothpaste ('cos you leave one tube at home with the missus and have to buy another one for your own use) are all valid reasons for IE.

Check the JSP by all means. You don't even need to wait until Monday because JSP 752 is available on the www. However, when you do you will find the advice you have been given is correct, you cannot claim IE in the circumstances you have stated. Anyone else in your position who is claiming is risking their career and/or pension for the sake of £5.

Can I just ask, though, why you asked for advice on here if you intended to look up the answer for yourself anyway? (Not a criticism, I wish more people were as proactive, I'm just curious).

P.S. Shinyscot is a shiney. The clue's in the name!!

I'd be more interested to find out if you are able to claim for the fuel while commuting?
This will be worth more than IE anyway as you nearly always get more back than it actually costs.

You should be arrived at your temporary unit on JPA which will allow you to claim HDT for the 2 days.

There is no entitlement to IE, nor the cost of your coffees.

I didn't intend to look it up as i was hoping someone would say "yes you can claim because it says blah blah in the JPS" or "no you can't claim because of blah blah as it states in the JSP".

Reading some of the comments, they appear to be their belief/interpretation, which is why i decided it best to check myself.

I didn't believe i could, but some on the course stated they were going to claim, simply because we are there for 2 x days and any refreshments throughout the day need to be paid for out of my pocket. Which actually does sound feasible.

DB the only feasible bit was where you used to be able to bean steal lunch by just signing the visiting personell list in the mess. I'm pretty sure thats all stopped now as well especially with pay as you starve. There also used to be rate 5's (I think that was the name) for when you were away from unit but not overnight. Nowadays you'll get nowt out of this lot anymore.

03.0113. Incidental Expenses (IE). IE are designed to cover necessary personal incidental expenses actually incurred when an overnight absence in a hotel or temporary Service single accommodation is occupied

I think that it says it all. You are at home so there is no entitlement.

I can't believe the question was asked really.

I was unsure, as were many of the others on my course AND if you look at one of my other threads, HR (the experts) couldn't agree on whether another claimcould be made on something.

So, the question was asked as i really did not know the answer! What if i had not bothered asking and banged in the claim i was told i was able to make? (by a SNCO btw) There goes my career for the sake of £10!!!

But thanks to all for assisting.
