I hate the m6

If you're like me, then you have to tackle the M6 or any other motorway on a regular basis and to be honest I think we must have the worst roads in the world.

I have been travelling up the M6 for over a year now and I cant believe how many completely pointless and disrupting roadworks that they have subjected the roads to. Personally I have driven up the same part of road a week before and its been fine yet a week later 3 miles of road works in place. I know the local councils etc have a budget to spend but for godsake, its taking the pi**.

Normally I sit in the car, in queues of traffic and just get frustrated knowing that there are some beers in the fridge for when I get home and that this will relax me but this weekend took the mick.

I know its the bank holiday and that every tom, dick and harry decides its a good idea to travel to the lake district but the road works dont help to ease the congestion. Does anyone have any break through ideas to make Britains motorways better if so lets hear them! Rant over.

P.S I HATE CARAVANS!!!

Build more of them and/or employ the feckless to labour on the existing works to finish them quicker. If you are sat in the car in a queue, at least you'd have a warm and cosy glow watching the doleys earn their keep.

Yeah another thing Ive noticed now that you mention it. They never work Friday afternoons, surely they need to get the job done as quickly as possible to stop delays, yet fridays and saturdays are a no go! WTF people, work should be getting carried out 24/7 until the jobs is done therefore it wouldn't say " road works until Dec 2010" it would say "road works until September 2010" ahhh so annoying!

They should also make the muppets in the DoT get their hands dirty and join the workforce instead of sitting around in offices dreaming up even more dumb ar5e traffic schemes.

Off Topic Do you remember 'Back to the floor'? Highest managers filmed actually 'Doing the job' down at the work face, priceless! It should be periodically compulsory to get down there and see reality not Ivory Towers reality.

Only allow caravanners to travel between the hours of 0100-0500...That should free up some road space for us normal people...

To be fair, I saw very few caravans while averaging 30mph on my 200 mile journey home yesterday. The biggest problem by far at the moment is the amount of roadworks, particularly on the motorways. I know the roads need maintaining and they're in a very poor state presently but there is a distinct lack of joined-up thinking going on at the Highways Agency.

I mean, who thought it would be a good idea to dig up the M3, M25 and M1 at the same time? And then, the week after I work out an alternate route home to dig up the A34 and A43 as well. :pDT_Xtremez_32:

Second that.

Also HGV's have to keep to the left hand lane as they take soooooooooo long trying to overtake each other at 1 mph faster in lane 2

I blame all the commuters taking up the road space and only one person per car. ******'s. They're the people who are doing the damage in the first place
As for the trucks, if you stop spending you superstar wages in the shops, there'd be no need for the trucks to get out there and deliver to them. Stand outside your local sipermarket and count the shopping trolleys coming out. That's how much stuff has to be delivered into the store.

Think about it! We're all to blame. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

Here here! Although Caravans don't really clog up motorways they do clog up smaller roads.

I remember with great affection being stuck behind a caravan in Cornwall on the small roads, OK there's no room to overtake so live with it. BUT, as soon as there was a small section of 2 lane road to overtake the selfish tw4t floored his Range rover making everyone have to really struggle to get past.

Why didn't he think to let those stuck behind him get by?

The Police should have dragged him from his car and beaten him for 15 minutes for being such a selfish ar5ehole. (And when I'm PM they will. :pDT_Xtremez_32:).

If I got to be Transport Minister, I'd insist that a very large proportion of the freight traffic goes by Rail. I reckon that this would do much to alleviate the problems on the motorway.

Expand the Rail network !

The motorways were a joke back in the 80's, I used to do the weekend commute from London to the Midlands. Merging onto the M1 from the M25 on a Friday evening was "fun". I even delayed leaving London until around 8pm and although the M25 was better that M1/M25 intersection was still gridlocked. Roadworks, can any one explain to me the reason why they used to cone off on a Friday for work to begin on a Monday.

I think it is something to do with the 'Contract'. There was a scheme once where the road was, in effect, hired to the contractor for a fixed period of time. Anything over and they were charged for it.

The biggest proportion of frieght traffic these days is fresh(ambient), or chilled produce. Most of it only has a shelf life of around 5 or 6 days. Rail just couldn't deliver in time. All the local goods yards were closed 30 years ago. You just couldn't achieve it. Supermarkets work on a just in time scheme. They order produce at 8pm for a 5-30am delivery next day.

Can someone please explain what tesco and Asda both operate tractor/trailer combos that have a maximum speed of 40MPH on main roads? In Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, thats just plain hate material.

On an A Class road, 40mph is the limit for HGV.

We could learn from the Japs here. Road repairs only carried out at night with large metal panels in place over the work in progress during the day.
