Bit of a shame - remember the nicety that was being able to chill for a couple of hours with a bunch of bods squeezed in to watch a DVD and a pizza in the BFT.

Mind you the Burger King lorry had about a month and a half with signs up saying "Sorry no burger - fries only"!

He doesn't seem to understand the value that a few home comforts bring and the impact they have on morale.

That will put him in the same boat as a lot of our senior officers then. Morale is but a dirty word banded about by the erks!:pDT_Xtremez_34:

During my last trip to the Spam DFac (OK, 3 and a bit years ago), there was a choice of about 3 styles of food (tex mex, Indian (curry, not buffalo!), 'american') plus fast food, pizzas, ice cream, cookies, coke etc. Why they then need Burger King, Pizza Hut, Subway, 3 x Green Bean Cafe, (Canadian) Tim Horton's and the AAFES was always a burning question, especially as all that stuff comes along the MSR from Pakistan.

So long as they leave the EFI alone!:pDT_Xtremez_42:

Slightly inaccurate reporting from Sky.....what is actually being cut back on is the number of AAFES concessions in theatre. Using KAF Boardwalk as an example, it may be that either Burger King or Pizza Hut go but thre is a new TGI Fridays that opened in January and an Italian that may already be opened (if not it will be opening soon). Personally I'll be glad to see them both go - the food was total crap (that is assuming that the sceptics hadn't already gotten through the entire stock).

I've not got a problem with this one bit. It may even mean the 9-5 warriors in the DAG may even spend some time doing their primary job rather than constantly nipping out for coffee and doughnuts.

I just feel sorry for those out in the FOB's who look forward to the bit of junk that is supplied at the boardwalk..

I watched a documentary last week about women on the frontline who were at Inkerman and had been on the same menu for 4 months.. fcuk that..

I don't know how long the spams do out there but i was always under the impression it was about a year.. if this is the case surely they should be allowed some normality in their lives?

The only time the guys on the FOB get to KAF is when the air bridge is screwed, so not an issue really.

D&V was rife from the junk wagons last time I was there.

Spams do 12 + months, and based on my experience of some of them the boardwalk to them was like a major city back home! Thats the only point is the longevity of the spams in theatre. But hey its not me so crack om

I'm out in KAF at the moment and from what our boss has said the Yank zob has only targeted Burger King and Pizza Hut. Maybe because his troops are all getting fat arses as going by the queues there they eat a **** load of this junk and the mile long queue is 99% yanks.

I'm proud to say that on my 5th two month tour here I haven't touched the boardwalk for food at all. I did have to laugh at the fact that TGI Fridays has pitched up with a full restaurant (Very Expensive). Unreal tbh.

However, I still have to laugh at the people who bang on about all the home comforts. Is it so bad to be able to eat what you want rather than the repetative menu that the DFACS present each week? I know the FOBS don't have the same comforts but you know the yanks, they can't go anywhere without all the bells and whistles.

I can probably say that our section could quite easily do without the boardwalk takeaways as not a lot of people bother with any of them apart from Tim Hortons for leaving donuts and thats it.

If you don't use it then you won't miss it!

Having just been pinged for KAF next year as the radar guru I am concerned at the erosion of what I thought was going to be an easy tour!!

I may have to spend most of my days at Bastion instead!

Been before and going back imminently. Would I miss the fast food outlets? Personally no, although I used to quite like a foot long sub on a Saturday to eat whilst watching the Rugby on BFBS. The food in the DFACs is fine, having been in the mob for 33 years now, its much better than we got when I was a scroat. Just keep Timmy Hortons, good coffee and a doughnut as a treat when people were leaving or fined. McCrystal is cutting down at KAF because the guys up country don't get it, he is levelling things out for the Yanks. Since we piggy back on their stuff, why would we miss it?

There's a Blog on the ISAF Website from Command Sgt Maj Hall giving the rational:

“Ninety percent of what we do is about having a worthwhile mission and good leaders. Ten percent is the other stuff.”

Many of you have heard that there are plans to shut down some of the “amenities” throughout Afghanistan. This is not rumor. It is fact. This is a warzone – not an amusement park. From the moment GEN McChrystal and I arrived in Afghanistan last summer, we began looking for ways to do things more efficiently across the battlefield – the optimization of ISAF. This effort includes moving and reallocating resources to better accomplish our mission.

One of the ways we’re going to do that -- in order to accommodate the troop increase and get re-focused on the mission at hand -- is to cut back on some of the nonessentials. That includes some of the morale, welfare and recreation facilities throughout Afghanistan. In the coming weeks and months, concessions such as Orange Julius, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen and Military Car Sales will close their doors.

Other changes will not be so obvious. We will also reduce the amount of canned and bottled goods coming into country, as well as first-run movie showings and non-USO entertainment shows.

What it comes down to is focus, and to using the resources we have in the most efficient and effective ways possible. Supplying nonessential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupplied with ammunition, food and water.

Some concessionaire contracts will remain although there are many that may not be renewed as the terms of the agreement expire. Commanders across the battlefield are implementing additional cut backs while still providing services within individual nations’ interests and regulations. Green Beans Coffee will remain at bases across Afghanistan. Bazaars and businesses which employee Afghans and feed the local economy will still continue to operate.

What won’t change or be diminished are the facilities that cater to service members’ well being and morale. Physical fitness centers will be equipped with cardio and weight equipment. We are working hard to get more bandwidth in country so we can provide troops throughout Afghanistan with faster, more reliable and more affordable (perhaps even free) Internet services and access to phones to stay connected with loved ones.

Some will say the decision to do away with these amenities is meant only to make things harder for deployed service members, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Closing these facilities will free up much-needed storage facilities at both Bagram and Kandahar, space which is critical as 30,000 additional American and up to 7,000 international troops flow into Afghanistan over the next several months.

As the expansion continues, especially throughout the winter months, having a place to secure equipment will prove vital to outfitting units with basic items and essential equipment. These closures will also lessen the amount of flight and ground convoy traffic across, and in and out of, Afghanistan, reduce both local and military security requirements, free up ramp space on airfields, and drastically reduce the water and electricity needs required to operate these businesses.

We have an important mission here in Afghanistan, and its one the world is watching and paying attention to. We have a responsibility to outfit our troops with everything they need to be successful. Efficiently providing troops what they need to accomplish the mission is the right thing to do.

Below is a short extract from a couple of emails, me in red, Lt Col USAF ret in blue.

General Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of special forces in Iraq, has waged war on junk food, and ordered that outlets including Burger King and Pizza Hut are closed down.

In MY book, that makes him an asshole! A typical obama puppet.

Duane.

I have always been amazed at the level of luxury ourAmerican friends take to war with them, this guy will lose a lot of friends I think.

Fair play on him I say.

Don't forget - This is guy who set up the military infrastructure in in Iraq to smash AQI (with a lot of help from the British SF) , so maybe he knows or thing or two about insurgencies.
