What's the obsession with badges all about?

At an uber-secret SF wannabe unit on the M6, on a fecking freezing windy rainy day, one of the new lads was told by his SNCO he could not wear his field jacket due to it not being badged up. This Monday the order was given for sleeves to be worn rolled up (Another rant there!) so he went around in short sleeves despite the weather. I can't say I'm surprised given the mentality of some of the people here, but that is fecking ridiculous.

The mind boggles.........

The sleeves up at BST has been going on the wing under the previous wobbly for many years, its not a new thing.
If the SNCO responsible for that decision is who i think it is, then he is a YES man with a very bad promotion/officer laugh.

Want to wear your Jacket? Get it badged up.

It is part of your uniform and the SNCO was maintaining the right standards by telling your mate to get it sorted.
The fact that it was p1ssing it down and brass monkeys isn't his fault, but it is your mate's for not getting his kit sorted.

He could have worn his Gortex though.

Before I get shot down - yes, I know am well out of touch, but ...

I thought AP 1358, Chap 2, said that shirt sleeves should not be rolled up. Isn't that why short-sleeved shirts are issued instead?

Still wearing DPM despite CAS instruction. Last WO did not want to upset Army who now own the camp, so we follow Army dress regs. Might as well rip off RAF badges!!!!!

I'm not sure they issue short-sleeved CS95. :pDT_Xtremez_21:

Summer/Winter dress

Summer/Winter dress

Once whilst working in a Joint (Army) environment overseas I was informed that it was now winter dress, to which I replied that in the RAF we no longer have winter nor summer dress, we use our common sense to dress appropriately to the conditions at the time. I was quite surprised there was no shouting following this and I continued to walk around with my sleaves rolled up despite mid 20 degree bright sun shiney weather.

Short Sleave CS 95 will never do as there will be room for all the badges.

OC TCW has introduced a summer/winter CS95 dress regs. So sleeves up during summer, no det t-shirts etc.. which i think is a good thing.. hes fought enough to get us in greens at any opportunity and i think trying to instill some standards across the wing is a brilliant idea.

What is wrong with instilling standards in blues? Did you join the RAF or the Army?

We all complain at times about the Army getting credit for things the RAF have done and one of the easiest and cheapest ways for us to gain credit is to raise the profile of the RAF by wearing the uniform we are given. I don't understand why anyone in the RAF needs to wear greens on a daily basis and all this nonsense about practicality is just that. I'm a technician and it isn't practical for me to wear blues going about my daily job so I'm expected to get to work at least 5 minutes early to put on overalls and I don't see why everyone else can't do that.

I see that petty mindedness is still in the RAF. Back in 1984, Princess Ann was due to visit Brize. I was on TCW and the craze amongst the troops was for extended DMS boots. However, we were told that on the day, we would have to wear Puttees as well to cover up the extensions! In addition, if we wanted to see the Princess royal, we would have to stand behind hessen screens!

Having worked at a joint HQ overseas I was MORE than happy to ignore the pongo attempt to rule the world and stuck to my KD. I was challenged by a pongo zob one day as i stood resplendent in my KD shorts and dessie boots with "why are you wearing shorts in this HQ young man?"

Well far from being young I replied "because I have the legs for it Colonel" Much grumpiness ensued along with being told to wear CS95. I declined as it requires the authority of the RAF Dress Policy Cttee, even in joint units before we can be made to wear pongo clothes.
