Whats the correct thing to do when in uniform when a hearse goes by?

Having seen the Wooton Basset stuff on the news it seems no one knows. Some just stood there, some stood to attention and others saluted.

Whats the gen?

As I was taught, the things to salute are:

1) Commissioned Officers
2) Royalty
3) Ensigns & colours
4) Funeral procession

Surely it's laid down in some shiney JSP or QRs.

Depends whether or not there's a coffin in said hearse.

If no coffin, then let it go past.

If there is a coffin in it, I was taught at Swinderlitz, you show due respect for the deceased and salute (unless you're part of a parade then let the parade commander give suitable orders).

Not likely seeing as GD is part of TG17!!! How many Armourer WO's keep a copy of QRs in their office??:pDT_Xtremez_19::pDT_Xtremez_19:

In my experience most of them do, just in case they have to answer a question from the likes of P1 or flt cdr etc. :pDT_Xtremez_30:

We are all briefed that should the funeral courtage pass with coffins in you are to halt, turn to face the procession and salute and that goes for all ranks

I was also told to stand to attention when a hearse went by, even when in civies.

Nope. Maybe its in some bomb head AP?

The AP is AP 818 (Drill and Ceremonial) in which I could only
find rules for funerals (only officers are to salute the coffin,
all others are to bring themselves to attention). However, TBH
I wasn't looking for rules regarding corteges.

Not so mate. GD disbanded sometime in the mid 90's and was part of TG10 which was the General Service trade group. Whilst on a station, GD Flt comes under the auspices of BSW and OC GD/Stn Adjt (delete as applicable) is always a Pers Spt officer, they are nearly always civilian and the uniformed side of the fence is mostly any trade (e.g. a large chunk of SWO's being TG8, amongst others).

Going back to topic, when you pass a funeral cortege whilst in uniform, you salute.

I thought you were to salute (if in uniform) a hearse carrying a coffin which has a Union Flag over it, all others there was no need.

AP818 doesn't differentiate between service corteges with Union Flags and civilian corteges. If in uniform stand to attention and salute. Simples.

Cheers for the info.
I always knew you stood to attention, just didn't know if you saluted or not.

My tuppence worth, I see no need to acknowledge any civilian cortege whilst in uniform other than a cursory nod to respect the dead. Military cortege, if it is passing you whilst in headdress stand to attention and salute. If in civvies, stand and bow your head. There is nothing in the 818 about etiquette, only drills.

My days at Swinderbutlins taught me salute a funeral procession when in uniform. If youre in civvies then show some mark of respect ie stand to attention or bow your head.

Same training as you mate.

I guess that any confusion at Wooton Basset is due to the fact that there is a mix of serving and ex service people (with headdress and some association colours on display) and when they are lined up some may think they are part of a formal parade, if this was the case an Officer would salute.

Fact is that they are not part of a formal parade which means all wearing headdress should salute and any colours lowered.

If you are in uniform and a funeral procession passes you are required to salute. Used to be more common many moons ago when police constables on foot patrols used to be seen saluting as a hearse went by..
