FIA declares double diffusers legal

The FIA International Court of Appeal has declared the double-decker diffuser designs used by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams as legal.

Following overnight deliberation by the judges after a court hearing in Paris on Tuesday, the ICA has rejected the protests lodged by Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, Renault and BMW Sauber.

The move means that the three teams at the centre of the dispute will be able to keep the concepts on their cars for the rest of the season, with it now up to their rivals to fit similar diffuser designs to their machines as soon as possible.

Opinion down the pub the other night was that they would be declared illegal, but I reckoned too many folk thought Ferrari were getting too easy with the Teddy.
On the other hand, next year's Ferrari could be interesting. . . .

At last, some common sense. I bet there's some feverish activity in several garages this week!

I'd expect some teams to be testing theirs over the China GP!

I think it was Red Bull though that said they couldn't do a double decker diffuser without re-designing their gearbox. Ooops!

Gearboxes must now last for 4 consecutive races.
If it entails changing the gearbox, they will be penalized. To avoid this, they cannot change the box for another two races.
If they can't get the modified gearbox ready for the fifth race, they will then have to wait until the ninth race.

Macca's have been working on it for the past month, and I wouldn't be surprised to see possibly two teams "testing" it in free practice this week.

It all just detracts from the sport. Questions hanging over results and points. School yard cries of " Sir Sir thats not fair, look what they`ve done ". If I`d paid the amount of money they charge for a ticket, I`d like to walk away knowing who won ... not have to continually check the press for 2 weeks.

Rain ... F1 keep everone hanging around for ages, run out of time, award half points.

Rain ... MotoGP. Tell everyone it will be rerun tomorrow night. Tell spectators their original ticket is still valid.

I agree that we should have a decision at the end of the race, but you get stewards inquiry's with other sports as well, horse racing for one.

As for postponing the race for 24hrs, F1 is a much larger operation than bikes.
More team personnel, more equipment, hotel bookings for the teams, not to mention the cost of a 747 sat on the tarmac for another day.
It would be a logistical nightmare to rearrange esp if there was a race the following weekend.
I don't think that you would get the crowd on the Monday as most would be back at work, and what about the TV audiences?

The bikes are affected by all that crap to mate, they don't all get to the next race the "long way round" :pDT_Xtremez_15:

MotoGP pulled it off, I guess the bikes must be more professional and the fans more devoted ::D:

Surely the FIA will take this into account?

No.... The diffuser 3 have been clever in the same way as Colin Chapman was with the Lotus 72, 78 & 79. Colin said in the Lotus hey days " Give me a good 450 BHP motor and I will design a car that will beat a 525 BHP Ferrari.

Ferrari, Mclaren, Renault, BMW, Red Bull, FI and Toro Rosso missed the boat on this one and its tough luck if they have to take a penalty to do so sooner.

As has been siad many times in motor sport it's only cheating if you get caught! So an unusually large number of accidental rush of gearbox failures should be fine, maybe.

Renault ready to use twin diffuser this weekend....................

All eyes will be on the rear of the Renault in Friday practice in China after the team suggested that they may be capable of instantly adding a twin-diffuser to their struggling R29.

Following confirmation from the FIA's International Court of Appeal that the design of the 'double-decker' diffuser used by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams is legal, the race is on among the remaining seven teams to install their own secondary diffuser.

Rob Bell has been busy.....................
