Crystal clue in army brain injury

A colour-changing crystal attached to a soldier's uniform could help doctors decide if they need treatment for a brain injury, researchers say.
The crystal reveals the intensity of a bomb blast the wearer has been exposed to, helping doctors treat injuries that might not be immediately apparent.

If this meant quicker diagnosis and treatment - everyone in harms way should be issued it immediately!

Anything which means diagnosis and treatment is more effective in this way must be a good thing. I just hope it's aimed at being widely available and used effectively once all the research is completed. How many may have been alowed to slip through the net when in reality they have suffered brain damage.

I'm guessing you would need one mounted at the front and rear of your helmet otherwise it could still give inaccurate readings and may be relied upon too much (ie there's nothing wrong with you 'cos your crystal's ok).

but as long as it's thought through it can only be a good thing.

Many years ago I worked for 3M the "Scotch Tape" company, you know, the company who gave us the original "Post-It" pad. They had patented a package label with a small clear glass tube situated in centre. If the package was dropped, or depending on the sensitivity violently shook the clear tube would turn red showing that there was a chance of damage. The customer could then reject the package without even opening it.

Obviously not in the same league but twenty odd years on I see that a more very highly advanced system of shock detection is in the offering. I hope it catches on it would be a life saver.

Eerrrmm...
(and I do mean this as a joke!!!)

If they only find your helmet... will it help?

Will this mean that future soldiers will get mugged for their crystals?

Will it say if it was a friendly blast or not?

More seriously...
You wont get it for years because it has to be costed, negotiated, modified to prove it, adapted to MOD standards until it wont work anymore, negotiated even more and then priced out of MOD's reach so that the yanks can have it.

So you drop your helmet in your pod before deploying on a patrol, what use is the crystal now?
