So much speculation! The media is full of it at the moment with so called "experts" popping up to give their view.
They should all wait for the results of the investigation before backslapping and idle chatter.

Haven't been able to access PPRUNE since this happened "Server busy, blah, blah".

No doubt swamped with ill informed spotters and pilots who flew the Comet for years, all spouting sh1te and biccering over who knows the most.

Oh yeah, lets not forget the lazy journo scum who will be quoting these "experts" in their exclusives:pDT_Xtremez_32:

Live feed on the beeb now.
Looks like it came down 400-500m short of 27 left. The worrying thing is that is aircraft had a major problem then it flew across a big chunk of London.

I work at Hatton Cross and was just on my way to work up the M3 when this news broke. The point about having a problem then flying across London is moot, not borne out by passenger statements. One stated that the landing seemed heavy then it all went wrong. If the Captain had been aware of a fault surely he would have briefed the cabin crew and passengers to allow them to brace and prepare for the landing. Whatever happened must have been so close to the runway that he did not have time to go through the checklists but just tried to get the jet down. I took some pictures from the A30 where I was sat for a while, and 1 from where I work, (about 5-600 yards from where it came to rest) not that great from my phone.

I did suggest that the happiest people regarding this incident will probably be Etihad,:pDT_Xtremez_40: the screensavers all over Heathrow will probably be changed from their wrecked A340 at Tolouse!:pDT_Xtremez_19:

Just come off PPRuNE and, yes the pundits are having a field day with their 'theories'. (600+ reading the BA thread alone) Don't know about the Comet pilots, but there is one chap quoting advice from a Lanc pilot FFS !

Anyway, here's a link to the Heathrowpictures.com website with lots of decent size piccies of the stricken plane : http://www.heathrowpictures.com/pictures/pictures.html

Interestingly, Danny himself has posted a couple of pics from this site which seem to show the port engine blade tips pretty well buggered, and the stbd engine looking almost untouched. As he says though, it could well have something to do with the badly damaged cowl on the port engine ? Time will tell. Also it seems the RAT was deployed ( shown in another picture ) which would tend to support the theory that both engines had flamed out on app. Again, speculation but interesting none the less.

You have my sympathies!:pDT_Xtremez_15:

I don't see it as a moot point. If it was a system failure and it had happened 5 minutes earlier then it would have impacted in London.

Seen on the news conference the CAPTAIN firmly praising the co pilot as HE WAS THE ONE AT THE CONTROLS!
Sounds like slopey shoulders to me?

No its sounds like SOP to me. Its a routine thing to happen, that is all decided in advance.....You do the take off, I'll do the landing etc. The Captain still has overall control of the aircraft, he just wasn't operating it. How else do you expect Copilots/First Officers to gain the necessary experience to go on to be captains?

The Co-Pilot is quite capable of handling the aircraft. If the Co was to handover controls to the Captain as the incident happened it could do more damage! Let me see 160mph, 2 miles out - you do the math on how long the guy would have had to deal with it.

Good drills by the whole crew!

sorry

I didn't mean it like that.

I meant he was quite keen to explain who was at the controls in case anyone decides it was pilot error down the line.
I am fully aware of the protocols and yes I know he will still be responsible if they blame human error.

We will all have to wait and see what they decide.

All looked very professional and by the book from what I have seen.

Maybe it was this point the pilot was putting across. Commending the professional skills of the co-pilot. Instead of having praise on him he's actually saying "don't praise me this man did it".

Good to know no lives were lost and no serious injuries suffered.

I blame the Wright Brothers.

If they had scewed it all up just like all of the rest, then this would never have happened and I would have had an easy time in the RAF.

Well it's all sorted now, in yesterdays Sun they had a graphic showing the aircraft pitch nose up and said that this and the loss of power was caused by a computer glitch. Well the AAIB might as well go home now then the Sun has sussed it out. Next week you will be able to download a free Sun Boeing 777 computer software glitch patch which you can bluetooth to the aircraft if you are on board and this happens again, this patch will come with free wallpaper of a bird with her t!ts out.:pDT_Xtremez_31:

Back to reality, when I left last night they had the cranes on site and also air-bags and were readying things to lift the aircraft. once this is done they can assess and repair the runway. I would think they will reopen it sometime next week.
