I would like to start by saying hello to e-goat and all who use this site. May god bless her and all who post on her.

I suppose you want to hear a little about myself, well here goes.

I am currently serving as a JNCO in her maj's finest blue organisation. Who knows I may one day aspire to become a SNCO.

My interests are all things environmental and like to indulge in what some call high profile activities within the service. I have been told that this will help me to progress through the ranks but at the detriment to my primary role, which I find hard to believe.

I'm a sootie by definition but haven't got my hands dirty for a while due to my career path, also I haven't been MSAT'ed yet.

I've worked on the AT fleet once upon a time, but that's another story.

I have joined e-goat in the hope some of the members could aid and assist with advice on how to advance my career to it's fullest.

Hi there HPLO and welcome to the Goat. May I offer you 2 pieces of advice?

1. Always remember your primary role but never be afraid to take on extra duties and ignore those who take the p1ss because they don’t know better.

2. If you want to get promoted and have a career in the RAF you need to get through your MSAT course ASAP, without it you will get nowhere.

Hello and welcome.

Hello and welcome.

Welcome to the goat dear friend.

Don't be afraid to do what's right. I am about to remove myself from my 'primary' task and move in a direction that will hopefully open new roads.

Ignore the nay sayers 'cos if everyone listened to them, Orville and Wilbur would never have dreamed to fly ....... and you'ld be in the army or navy now!

Enjoy the site and use it to get all that you need... especially if you need a laugh!

All the best

Welcome to the goat. Nice to have someone on board that can spell for a change.

With regards to secondary duties. Try and pick one that doesn't impinge too much on your primary duty or you can do mostly in your own time.

Secondary duties are used by PMA to differentiate between similar candidates but if you don't get the right numbers for your primary duties it is wasted effort if promotion is your only reaon for doing them.

A high profile secondary duty was more useful in the days when Stn Cdrs came to writing your 3rd RO report on a Spec Rec as he would more than likely know you. I would recommend some involvement with RAFA or golf (if the staish also plays).

If your interests in the environment are genuine then I don't see why you shouldn't do it, because doing what you like doing may be more important than promotion.

I am avionics, but I too have 'never got my hands dirty' in the whole of my 22 year 'career'. That hasn't really hampered my promotion stakes in the past but in the current way of thinking, ie 'First Line First', some experience at front line might benefit your promotion prospects. They are looking for the sort of person that can be dropped into any situation 'running'. Participating in and organising Force Development training/events seems to be the sort of thing to boost your prospects at the moment particularly if you work in a sedentary post.

If you really want to get promoted and you 'are in the frame' give PMA the broadest option of places and work types to post you on promotion by avoiding the use of 'NO_MOVE' and negative preference boxes. Don't forget that we will soon be completing our annual reports in computerised form via JPA and I personally believe PMA will take advantage of this to do at least some of the filtering.

Dear Soon to leave

I refer you to one of your own earlier posts

Glad I joined up when I did as a DE technician in '85.

But I'm even gladder that I'm very close to leaving.

When I signed on to LOS 30 I was glad to do so.

Trouble now is that everyone (including Regt, Chefs, etc) regard themselves as 'techies' as well.

Best part of being in the forces is the pension, so I'll start taking it at my earliest opportunity.

I would definitely not join up now

I suppose now you got your Chief you'll hang on to upgrade your pension to Flt Sgts - but either way I can't see how the fekk you, who has done fekk all RAF ish since the day you joined, can give anyone career advice

Thank you to all of you that have welcomed me. There is some good advice being offered which I shall take onboard. If people have an issue with me having time away from my primary duty in order to enhance my career prospects then balls to them I say.

I look forward to engaging in some intersting debates in the future.

HUJ

You obviously have nothing of value to say and just want to take the opportunity of slagging off someone that has taken the opportunities to avoid working in their core trade. Quoting something I said out of context of this thread only serves to confuse.

I thought my experience was relevant to HPLO as he has chosen a similar path and therefore faces similar challenges to promotion that I have faced in the past. He will also be judged by people like you that will think he has done nothing of value.

I hope my previous post hasn't given you nightmares but it does seem to have hit a raw nerve!
