Off to Berlin in the new year, there must be a wealth of info among the goaters on things to do!

Especially interested in the Cold War stuff - the Wall, Stasi-museum, etc.

Anyone got and advice?

I was disappointed in Berlin in so much that is still is a building site although our mistake was was to go with 2 ten year olds who wern't that interested in the History of the place. Check Point Charlie was particularly uninspiring but the museum there was full of relics of the Cold War and definately worth a visit.

Like to go back to explore Jewish museum, Olympic Stadium and the Reichtstag where Hitler did his speech and can recommend the Crowne Plaza Hotel which is ideally situated in the centre of the city and reasonably cheap to stay in (but don't drink there!).

If you are going with children the Zoo and the Tiergarten are worth a visit.

If its History you after, then Wannsee is the place! If anyone doesn't know why, then you bloody well should There was a little conference there in 1942!

If you're after some reasonablty priced eating there is a Lownebrau Haus Bar and restraunt in Messe. Come out of Chekpoint Charlie on the old American side. Come to a big crossroads about 400 m away opposite a Sparkasse. Turn right on the same side as Sparkke and about 5-10 mins on the left is said bar. Top food, top beer and not that expensive.

With your back to the Brandenburg gate(the old "West side" cross the road onto the right hand side of the road. About 2 mins walk down the wide road you may recognise from some history programs you come across two T34 tanks. This is the old Sov memorial and there is a small information centre at the back in a park leading to the Reichstag.

Check out if there are any big match's etc before heading to the statium,as they lock it down some time before,there are loads of bunker,flak tower etc tours but they need to be booked in advance, day and week tickets on public transport are spot on and show our transport system up.
There is another huge soviet memorial in the old east that's in a park just a short walk away from the s rail route the name escape's me at the moment.there is still a lot of work going on and some musuems are closed or moved so any internet homework will pay off.
By the way the its a lot nicer going out at night there i'm just sorry the exchange rate is so pants at the moment.

Treptow if I remember rightly, went in '81. beer was cr@p, sausage was cr@p memorial was impressive.

A german historical society runs regular tours of a large air raid bunker in Northern Berlin ( Almost all were destroyed or filled in but this one was part of the structure of an underground station and couldnt be gotten rid of easily ), as well as a Flack Tower in nearby Wedding.

If you get a ticket for the Berlin City museum on the Kurfusterdam then the tour includes access to a civillian Cold War fallout shelter in the basement of a multi storey car park ( an impressive installation it is too ).

If you do make it out to the Luftwaffe museum at Gatow then it could be worth stopping at the Commonwealth War graves at Spandau - mainly RAF bomber aircrew.

I flew there from Oakington in a varsity in 74. I,ll never forget the crosses and memorials next to Checkpoint Charlie to those who had died trying to escape. It made you realise why there was a cold war and what the consequenses would be if we lost.

The Mitte (literally middle) of Berlin has once again become the focus of Berlin nightlife. It is housed mainly in the former East, just east of the Brandenburg gate.
When I was there last, I visited the Ku'Damm for old times sake. Still worth a visit, but not the same as it was.

Berlin can be a bit pricey, especially with todays exchange rate, but it is still one of the best party cities in Europe. You can eat and drink all night long and get a good breakfast in the morning!

Assel (Oranienburger Str 21) which also serves an 'existentialist breakfast', comprising a black coffee and a cigarette, or the 'hangover breakfast', featuring aspirin and Alka-Seltzer.

And one final tip. Go down to the Wannsee and take a boat trip to the Glienike Bridge and back

Frankly it's never been the same since the Mil Train stopped running and Edinburgh House Hotel closed.

Walking around the old East side in No 1 Uniform just because we could and taking in all of the sights courtesy of HM Gov.
