Can anyone give me some advice about repairing PS2s please. My lads PS2 gets an error message, "disc not reading" , everytime he tries to either play a DVD or a game. Is it worth repairing or not and would it be possible to do it myself?
Cheers

How long have you had it for? Mine started doing it about 9 months after I had it, I had it replaced by Sony as it is not worth repairing. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you could always buy him a ps3... :pDT_Xtremez_30:

Sounds like a dirty laser head mate...............Mini FOMz's had the same last year. Took it to a shop in town that cleaned it up and adjusted it slightly. Thing is though, once it starts to go, its on a downwards slope and on its way out.

Mine started doing the same, so i took it apart (about 8 screws) and cleaned the laser head with Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud. Put it back together and it works a treat and it is at least 3 yrs old and still going strong.:pDT_Xtremez_30:

I have read about people curing these type of problems by putting the PS2 upside down once you have put the disk in, might be worth a try.

Otherwise, i'd try a head clean as FOMz suggested.

If a bog standard dvd lens cleaner doesn't do the job (cheap fom tesco) It's not worth paying more than a few quid to get the laser adjusted. As the FOMZ said once you start playing with the laser it's on a slippery slope and will most likely need doing again in a few months and then pack in all together.

PS2 are quite cheap now so it may well be worth trying yourself and getting a new one if all else fails.

Cheers for the link rtw, I think I'll have a go myself, as has been pointed out if I fail then it'll be house insurance time.
Pie you fat cnut you should really stop taking the p155 out of gods trade, you got lucky with a punch a few years back against a rigger who weighed 7 1/2 stone sopping wet. It's not going to happen again and you never know you might even get that fabled riggers hammer stuck in the back of your big, fat swede!

I take it that it doesnt work with a variety of discs? It's not just a ****ty disc?

Take it apart as suggested and clean the lens. It is easy to do.

Beware of altering the laser sled. I did mine and it never worked again even though I adjusted it in small increments throughout the range.

The putting it upside down idea isnt as daft as it sounds. The lens holder gives a bit and sags with time so turning it upside down makes it sit where it once did!

Good luck.

If it happens again due and cleaning the laser doesn't work, try turning the player upside down to see if it works then. I know it sounds like a wind up, so bear with me.
The PS one had a fault rectified in this way. This was because the plastic slide the laser sat on would wear out and the laser would lose focus (Or some crap) a mate of mine used to carry out 1 off repairs by making a small cut into the plastic and spreading it a "Smidge" to make it work again. It's worth a thought dude.

Is it the sae general theory for a PSP...Mine stopped working a little while ago, and it was gng to cost about £75 to have sony fix it...Any suggestions.

I should add...It wil not plaay any games or video disks.

Could well just need a clean (fixed mine) you can get a specialist PSP laser cleaner from here

http://www.amazon.co.uk/GameDr-50201-OPTIC-LENS-CLEANER/dp/B000BU8YCU/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_h__text_b/202-2174017-3698217?ie=UTF8&qid=1176299606&sr=8-4

I just took mine apart and cleaned it without buying a specialist lens cleaner.

If the laser is fooked you can get a new one from here
