Preparing and filing with redundancy

The spectre of redundancy is starting to loom large with the announcement of a set of massive cuts to the next department in our IT dept. We all know it's coming but we don't know when. The first announcement was last year with the first department moving to overseas outsourcing at the beginning of this year and the stress of having this over our heads is difficult to say the least. My chances of staying are slim to snowball as I am not a team leader so no chance of looking after a team of off shores.

I would expect that some fellow Goaters have been through this so was looking for advice on what to do/prep before and after the event. I have read somewhere that you can come a cropper if you rush to gain employment straight away. However in late 40's in the IT industry my options feel few.

Good luck fella, if it's a crap package then you might as well jump ship before your colleagues do. If it's a good package then there always the potential to negotiate an agreeable exit date.

Same happened to us in January. The new IT boss announced he wanted to cut 68 staff and if he didn't get that through voluntary severence he would make compulsory redundancies. I was taken out of my technical role a made a team leader but in a call centre environment in charge of contractors. I immediately applied for voluntary severence as did the whole it function. 68, including me ,got severence and a decent pay out and about 40 others simply resigned and went elsewhere. The fcuking idiot in charge also resigned a few months ago, he ended up with more staff then before, many of whom had no idea how to look after the in house systems and he's gone massively over budget to pay for contractors. My advice, look for something else and don't worry, things will sort themselves out. Good luck!

Vim, I'm in software asset management (licencing) so it's a bit specialised. However due to the size of my company I only have experience in desktop.

Even though I know it's coming I think that the day of the announcement and actually leaving will still be shock. After 19 years and my age, I think that I am fearing the unknown.

I am getting my CV together and sorting out my LinkedIn profile. Luckily we are corporate members of BCS so already networking at the specialist group events. A bit undecided on getting certifications but will give it a good look soon.

What have other people done have you tried to find work straight away or spent some time regrouping?

Certifications will get you to the interview stage.
HR filter out those without the minimun.
Use "actualtest.com" if you need to get them quickly.
