The Met Office is an internationally renowned centre of excellence and a world-leading provider of weather and climate services. Observations are critical to all that we do – from providing the weather forecasts that millions of people rely on every day to the evidence that underpins our knowledge of climate change. To collect these fundamental observations, we utilise innovative methods that span both land and sea.

We support a fleet of Voluntary Observations Ships (VOS) from which the crew take observations using meteorological instruments provided by the Met Office. In this vital role, you’ll ensure that the quality, timeliness and availability of these marine observations meet user requirements and are delivered in line with plans and best practice.
