Does anyone know why the state of dress "Planters" is so called?

Been asked the question and nobody seems to know the reason why.

Anybody got any ideas.:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Mods sorry if this is in the wrong area.

Ditto,

'Planters' being the owners of the Rubber 'Plantations'.

It was too hot even for a linen suit!

Planters a bit further

Guys,

Thanks for the replies, lets take it one step further. There are various definitions of "Planters" what is the correct dress for "Planters".

Mine definition is trousers (Chinos style) and open neck shirt sleeve shirt.
Maybe correct maybe not. Over to you.:pDT_Xtremez_09:

Search google for "planters dress" or "planters rig"

"Planters" refers to a long sleeved white shirt with a tie and dark trousers.

I think planters was trousers and a long sleeved shirt with tie....... The term was still around in the 70's when I was in Singapore, although I certainly never wore a tie for the 30 months I was there.
