Long before today's clubbing scene 40 years ago, there was the Northern Soul scene at Wigan Casino. An all nighter with illegal highs and loud american bands your parents disapproved of and hadn't heard of anyway.

As a heavy metal fan I couldn't stand Northern soul but I had mates who got coaches down to Wigan just for the casino experience.

Ahh yes, Northern Soul. Mrs PSBM was a massive fan of that scene but I can't say the sound ever really floated my boat. There's a shelf full of of Norther Soul 45s in the sideboard behind me, think a few of them may be worth a bob or two.

I was born in Wigan and was a regular Sunday morning swimmer at the local pool. I recall most Sundays the place being full of clubbers who went in just for a shower!

I'm into soul music, everything from motown, atlantic, Sfax and northern soul but must admit there's some utter crud around mascara ding as northern soul. In fact I'm stuck in the 79s, smooth 70s is always on my house, especially on Sunday afternoon, with the smooth 70s Soul collection.

I was just struck by the fact there's nothing new in all night raves and clubbing. 1973 40 years ago some (not all) of the trendy and edgy people of the day stayed up all night partying and high energy dancing using naughty substances to stay awake, drinking caffeine rich sugary drinks and keep their energy levels artificially high.

Most of Lonnie Donegan's early music was based on black soul music before it was even known as soul music. A lot of it was composed by Huddy Leadbetter (Leadbelly) back in the 20's and 30's and much of it while he was spending one of his numerous stints in jail for for various offenses. I listened to music by him back in the 60's played by a variety of artists of whom Lonnie was only one.

Northern Soul wasn't my thing either but I have good memories of a couple of coach-trips that went to Wigan Casino for the all nighters. It was usually a night/early morning in Blackpool followed by an all nighter in Wigan and then lots of zeds on the coach home.

If I remember correctly, the DJ was a chap called Russ Stanley (or something like that)
