Did AC Tryer really say that, sounds more like something the Air Commodore would say.

Compared to the norm the time, effort and money the RAF invest in its new starters is quite substantial.

I don't know what the RAF requires today but judging from some of the comments on this site it appears that those on the front line get precious little of it. As for the current apprenticeship, how long does it last and are those who graduate classified as fully qualified tradesmen/technicians or do they still have to go through further training to achieve that?

It's not an apprenticeship unless it's at least 3 years long, involves being paid and treated like schite and doesn't involve the 3 letters NVQ.

Discuss.

Pffft, load of dogpile thats given those who dont actually have a clue about how training should be conducted a big stiffy on with excitement.

OFSTED mark Cosford to the same standards it applies to FE colleges. Cosford is NOT an FE college. Our trainees have not paid for their course to gain a qualification to show a prospective employer therby making it in their best interests to study. They are paid to be trained for immediate employment and if they fail an exam they dont pay for a resit they are given extra training at the colleges expense, i.e. they get spoon fed.
This means that an FE college can reasonably produce an exam which focuses only on one or two learning points - if the candidate fails he simply goes away, studies the material again an probably pays for a resit. We need to know how and why they failed so we can focus our extra tuition - not necessary according to OFSTED.
Ofsted want to see evidence of inclusivity - the trainees are selected to be here, they dont just pitch up on the doorstep. They dont like seeing classroom lessons - well bearing in mind our courses run at 1.5 times the speed of an fe college, someone tell me how the fcuk else im expected to get them to understand complex theory.
I could go on. OFSTED are happy as long as you tick certain pink and fluffy boxes. If you want a training regime that delivers training at tge appropriate level with systems in place that make sure the trainee has grasped a reasonable spread of the information to prepare him for straight employment on RAF aircraft - fcuk ofsted. We can do it better, were just not allowed to.
