minimalist martialing

OK lineys, is the quest for minimalist martialing still practised out on the front line?

I remember watching the Lineys on 23 back in the late 70s and early 80s reduce the handwaving required to park a Tomb pointing in the right direction from frantic mime arstistry as per training manuals to nothing more than an occasional wag of a fore finger and a glance at the spot the nose wheel should be. :pDT_Xtremez_14:

Of course nothing was more fun to watch than a start without comms, the right crew could perform a dance far better than any ballet company. :pDT_Xtremez_28:

I remember doing the "liney dance" on Jags. Aaaah them were the days :)

I still see today's lineys marshalling the same way "we" did. Nothing's changed by the looks of it. (Apart from the use of "deck hats" :( )

What's a Tomb? As a cabbage, I am berating myself severely for not knowing this! :pDT_Xtremez_08:

Exactly! Who needs a headset when you can have a dozen lineys all doing their version of swan lake (crossed with the Macarena) in a nice little line at colt....

It's a visible fad up our way as well.

Our new LAC Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics (we're not allowed to call 'em Flems!!) have the "big wave" technique, whilst our remaining Jelly Tots are strictly of the "finger-wagging" school of marshalling.

Not that the bloody aircrew pay the least bit of attention to us anyway.......

Nice to know not everything changes:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Bucc liney dance was pretty special, especially when it came to rolling the bombay.

the riggers and sooties sort of rocked the baby nicely in their arms but on the odd occasion us plumbers had to do it Gorillas with knuckles dragging was the order of the day:pDT_Xtremez_14:

Phantom Liney Dance was good too - especially when the new guy did the Bunny check! See-ins went a bit crazy too when the Liney doing wing-tips used to grab hold of the outer wing and get a free ride! :pDT_Xtremez_30:

Ah my fave part of the pan-dance! Anyone who has access to the 6 Sqn video will see a certain welsh SAC marshalling the jet to go one way...the jet goes the other. Cut to Liney...dayglo armbands ripped off and tossed into the air as he storms off he he :pDT_Xtremez_31:

ps. nothing like marshalling with your forefinger and thumb extended using the wrist flicking technique :D

Line Dancing

Line Dancing

Couple of ditties F'nar F'nar from Leuchars VAS late 70s. I'll just park my Zimmer. Not line dancing but:-
LACW Sumpy marshalling in a couple of Belgian Starfighters, whose pilots didn't seem to understand or ignored what she was indicating. They did their own thing and promptly ran into/over the chocks. Que one exploding stinkey, hurling abuse, marshalling bats, ear defs and flight deck jerkin.
Couple of us sitting in a 'rover watching another fella see in a yank C131 containing 'Admiral Martini'. Again Elmer wasn't following the signals and ended up going the wrong way. Our conversation went along the "Follow the signals not the blerk you 'kin yank *an*er!" plus a few more expletives. Next thing was OC Eng's 'Mini' haring up the peri track containing another bloke telling us to shut up as the Pye set in the rover was on permanent transmit, and we were providing our commentry to the whole station.
Another bloke sent out to see in a yank Tomb from iceland. Got lots of applause on walking in, as he had hijacked one of 43s jets.
230 Sqn late 90s, Line SNEC ran out of men, walked out of the Line hut put 1 hand up towards a stray Puma looking for somewhere to park. Got a flash from the Gro-bag pointed to a slot and returned to his desk. "very minimalist!"

Sounds like something Mick Shevill would do........!

I was 230 in the late 90's, well to 97 anyway before some muppet thought to spoil my fun and make me a jelly tot.

The best i've seen was a johnny foreigner (Le Francais) mirage liney at a very cold TLP Florrennes (Nov). the jock was strapping in whilst the intake blanks came off. and the see off crew never actually took his hands out of his pockets. Looked like the birdy song dance.
