A career sadly cut short, but one full of highlights fuelled by immense mauling ability. His leadership took the Lions to NZ and beat a seemingly invincible All Black side.

Agreed - and his rating as one of the best should be viewed against the other outstanding players of the era (Ripley etc); he was not playing at time where there was a lack of great players!! A genuinely brilliant player.

Met him once in the Players lounge at London Scottish, he was so polite and nice to my wife who nearly died when she recognised him without his headband.
