Medical question

Hello Guys and Gals,

Not sure if this has been posted before but had a quick look and couldnt find much.

Basically I'm awaiting my 4 year asthma period to be up (which is in January 2010).

Theres just been something thats niggleing abit aswell which is on my medical records that I was abit unsure of.

When I was at school I was diagnosed with depression (not for very long) I was never on any pills or anything like that but it does mention self harm but never a suicidal attempt. I've spoke to my docter about this and he says I'm fit to serve and will back me 100%. I'm now nearly 20 and it will be 5 years when I start my application proccess since this occured (nothing like that ever occured since).

Hope someone can shed some light of the situation? Thanks in advance.

Billog.

Billog,
You are asking a question none of us on here can answer (would you honestly accept medical advice off an internet forum?) The only way to know would be to speak to the AFCO, who will refer you to RAF specialists during your application process.

Sorry if thats not the answer you were looking for - but its the safest.

Billog, the AFCO won't answer that question either as recruiters are not medically qualified and medical suitability decisions are only made by the appropriately qualified and appointed medical staff.

Make your application and, when you get to medical stage, inform the doctor and see what he decides... remember, if he says that you are unfit for service you can still get backing from your own GP to appeal against the decision.

Thanks for the reply,

Just really wanted to know if this would affect my application or if anyone had any similar situations when trying to join before I asked the AFCO :)

I wouldn't worry too much about the self harming. You can't go back in time and change history. I was asked at my medical if I had ever self harmed and I answered that I had. They asked why, when and how often, which I answered truthfully. They made a note of the circumstances and that was it. I passed my medical.

Hey Rach, thanks for the reply! It's really re assureing to know that it didn't affect your application! Did they bring it up because it was on your med records?

Fingers crossed in January this will be the same case. :)

Not exactly correct there are certain medical conditions etc that if flagged up a a definate bar to joining up with or without a Dr's say so but if they are not sure or you think you have mitigating circumstances then the Dr is the fall back.

PM Psycho fluffy or freudian slip as they may have a better and more accurate opinion than some of the speculation on here good luck

No, it's a standard question and was never on my medical records. I just didn't want someone to notice the scars at a later date and end up getting kicked out because of lack of integrity or something.

Good luck for January.

Oh,

"as recruiters are not medically qualified and medical suitability decisions are only made by the appropriately qualified and appointed medical staff"

and that's a direct quote from the AFCO 5.... I'll send you one if you want Penfold.....
