The only man to be decorated by both side in the Falklands conflict. Working amid terrible conditions in the field, Surgeon Capt Rick Jolly, from Torpoint, Cornwall, saved the life of every British serviceman he treated. Despite the poor conditions, only three of the 580 British soldiers and Royal Marines wounded in action were to die of their wounds, and none while under his care. The ex Royal Navy medical officer has died, aged 71.

The terms hero and legend are often overused, but not in this case.
His work, leading his teams, in often the most austere and personally dangerous environments, was truly remarkable.
A skilled leader in every sense, and one to whom many in the medical branch and beyond have nothing but admiration and respect.
Rest well.

I can remember him being interviewed on the news and thinking to myself how can someone so big be so delicate in the operating theatre. Truly remarkable man in so many ways

Indeed, his story of the "Red & Green Life Machine" tells of some real medical improvisation and devotion to duty. His successes in the field hospital treating sometimes desperately wounded troops are all the more remarkable because, iirc, his medical speciality was Gynaecology!

RIP Rick, your duty is well done.

If anyone does happen to find themselves in the Falklands, the old refrigerated meat packing factory (now ruins) which was used as the "Red & Green life machine" at Ajax Bay is well worth a visit.
