Lets face it...

you can join the RAF as a Cyberspace Communications whatever on crap money and end up working on an IT helpdesk, or you can now apply for an IT Apprenticeship with the West Country CyberGeeks at 18 and actually end up doing the job the RAF is telling porkypies about... and actually earn more money as well...

I know which way I would go.. and it wouldn't be towards a blue suit.

I think you are getting the wrong idea of cyber. Cyber is just a name for ICT but in this decade google the word. They have cleverly named the terade now everyone thinks it is cyber security which is much more specialist and a different role altogether that pretty much only the lads in corsham or gloucester deal with

So in short everyone cyber communications it just IT communications!

I was told by someone in the know that it was perceived that one of the reasons recruitment was so poor was that the term ICT was associated with GCSE ICT which is pants. I fear that they've gone too far in trying to sex up the name and there will be some disappointed folks out there.

That's what I heard as well. ICT in school is all to do with Word and Excel.

Although how on earth they think that replicates across to someone walking into an AFCO, I'll never know.

I joined up as a TCO for no other reason than I didn't want to be a painter or a copper. It should be as simple as saying "If you like computing / networking / IT / gaming, then this is the trade for you". Not having to change the trade name over and over because of some strange perceptions.

Will look good on the CV though, I suppose!

Nah, I know what Cyber is, but the term is generally misused. Cyber is used as an abbreviated title for cyber warfare - utilising IT systems to infiltrate and affect 'the enemy'. This can also be broken down into offensive and defensive cyber warfare - pen testing, hacking, etc all fall into the mix at various points. It's this form of 'cyber' that the rest of the world is doing so well at (be it blackhat/greyhat/whitehat), and that we are generally falling behind on. That particular version of 'cyber' should be it's own trade group if it stays single service, but as I said I reckon it'll get sucked up by the Army / Q.

I can sort of understand the use of 'cyber' in the job description, as it's correctly used in it's other unabbreviated name - cyberspace, which is relating to the area in which it operates (internet/intranet/ethernet, whatever you want to call it).

What they should be calling you is Network Infrastructure Technitians....

I agree and i think that name will be regarded higher on a CV rather than the oxymoron general internet/intranet/WAN specialist that the current one is

I remember when I joined as a DE in the 1970's, the CIO (as it was called then) explained that the 12 month intensive training would result in a having a technician qualification recognised by any civvy company.

It didn't really matter to me, as I had already completed a civvy apprenticeship, so I wasn't really bothered when I discovered (before signing up) that what the weasel wording really meant was if I passed the course and got my four props it should make it easier for me to go to college and study for C&G/HND.

There were many 17/18 year old's on the techie courses at Locking who were a bit more than p1ssed off when they learned that it would be day release or night school to actually get a recognised technician qualification.

I wonder if any other goaters of my vintage were given the same line, we might be able to put together a class action, if nothing else it might be a bit of fun.

It is strange that all the jobs I've had since doing my apprenticeship only one employer has asked about my academic qualifications and wanted to see the certificates - that was the RAF.

Last thing I saw them do was late last year, and they made a right mess, required the guys from the west country place to sort their kit out. Oh and give them the right kit to do the job. And go and set it up.

Change in role title has probably sounded the death knell for TG4. Pongos have been trying to make a land-grab of Cyber for a while now, and the MODs trying to sit it under a single TLB. If that happens and the Pongos get it, then consider yourselves remustered. The other option is that the Gloucester Donut Boys take ownership of it, which will probably see it handed down to JSSO, and by default, Pongo Command; or it will get handed to the lads in Corsham; either way, the RAF will lose control of it any any associated assets.

Pongo's are not making a land grab however they are taking it more seriously than our boys. I've seen first hand from within the cyber environment a lack of support from RAF hierarchy hugely concerned that it's just a niche area. Army are developing policy, recruitment and employment strategies that should enable them to lead. It pains me to say it but we're getting left behind and need to support cyber PROPERLY.

If they started chopping up the TG then I'd question how much of your tasking would be transferred to other TGs, leaving TG4 with....what? TG17 could take on iHub (let's be honest it's not difficult to play with MOSS all day), Int could take on the Signals Units and Cyber...what does that leave? (that's actually a genuine question as I have no idea what you lot do other than iHub...)
